Hello Ken….This might be of interest to you. http://thesecondopinion.org/ offers multidisciplinary second opinions free of charge to patients diagnosed with new or recurrent cancer. A physician referral is welcomed but not required. Your may call or e-mail the office at thesecondopinion.org.
Also, you might want to contact Dr. Heinz Lenz at USC Norris Cancer Center, lenz@usc.edu. I find it to be of most importance as you have already initiated, on your Dad’s, behalf to contact physicians familiar with this cancer. Knowledge is power and it will lead you to make informed decisions. All my best wishes,
    Marion

Hi Ken…warm welcome from Minnesota. My dad was 71 when he was diagnosed. He received chemo, but would never benefit from surgery, cancer was discovered too late. I do know that had he been a candidate…he would’ve pursued it…ever the optimist.

I can’t offer you advise, but I can pray along with you.

Peace to you and your family,
    Jolene

    Hi Ken,

Welcome to the site, although I am sorry that you have to be here. My dad has CC and was diagnosed last year. He was 64 when diagnosed.

No experiences to offer on surgery as my dad wasn’t a candidate for it. He had PDT as his treatment, but I understand that that is more common a treatment in Europe, we are in the UK, although I do remember someone here who’s mum was undergoing PDT somewhere in the US.

Best wishes and good luck to you and your family.

    Gavin

    Hi Ken,
Welcome to our site. Sorry to hear your mother has cc. I agree with L ainy. If I was 88, I dont know if I would have the surgery. It is a BIG one, though I also know that we all want to fight, fight fight so perhaps I would.

My only experience is chemo and surgery. My first regime was hard on me (xeloda and oxaliplatin) so far my second one isnt too bad.

How is your parent feeling? I think that is often the decider on which treatment to do or not, along with size and placement of tumor of course.

Welcome to our world and sorry you had to find us. I just have to say that my mother is 93 and if she were in her late 80’s we would not put her through this surgery, but that is just my opinion. My husband is 77 and had a Whipple 4 years ago. The CC returned last year where his duodenum used to be and they “zapped” it with cyber knife. IF it could be used in this case it would be one of the most successful treatments with the least amount of side effects. Everyone is different and what is good for one may not be good for another and that’s one of the frustrating parts of this disease. I am sure you will hear from more posters on this wonderful board and now that you found us please keep us informed on your plan of treatment.

We got the news six weeks ago following endoscopic placement of a stent in the duct. We are waiting for Secure Horizons to authorize a consultation with Dr. Joseph Kim at the City of Hope in Duarte, CA. Initial concerns re surgery remain high and we are currently trying to assess other ablation therapies including radio-frequency treatments. Comments, information and recommendations of other specialists in the Souther California area are welcomed. Best wishes to all.
