Shira,
When the stent was changed, did the doctor tell you if he noted any sludge around the plastic one—if there is lots of stuff in there, this will cause an infection. It’s possible the infection was brewing and just happened to show symptoms the next day.The antibiotics probably need more time to work…I don’t know about the gall bladder unless it is also a symptom of the infection.
I know eating is difficult for many, but may I suggest a couple of things—-Radishes and its leaves are an excellent natural antibiotic, also garlic has a proven history in treating infections..the compound allicin is similar to penicillin.
Just adding these foods daily can aid in fighting the infection.
One more thing….eat lots of foods that clean the bile such as tomatoes, watercress, turnips and the leaves, parsley…oh, and horseradish is a natural antibiotic and stimulated the flow of bile.I hope something here helps…I totally believe in adding natural stuff to help.

July 22, 2009 at 7:21 pm #30140lainySpectatorHi Shira and welcome! I am wondering if its a reaction to the metal stent. Teddy has had 2 blood infections since his Whipple and both times he had horrible chills and fevers. They had to do special blood cultures. Sure hope the confused doctors get unconfused! With that said, I have a “new” niece and her name is Shira. Love it!

I’m praying for you and your mom. I have more questions than answers. Did they for sure identify the source(s) of infection? When I had fever and chills that lasted several days, I had lots of tests and blood work. After determining that I had both pneumonia and a urinary tract infection, I needed iv antibiotics for the eight days I was in the hospital and an additional number of days after I went home. For an antibiotic to work, it needs to “match up to” the infection it is expected to fight. Unfortunately, the human element makes the matching difficult because different people have different hormone levels, blood chemistries, and reactions to different elements. As for the enlarged gall bladder, I have no ideas. I suspect the gall bladder could be unrelated or it might be the body’s effort to process/remove the antibiotic. My gall bladder was removed more than a year before my cc diagnosis. Hope the infection goes away soon!

Just a thought, is she on chemo, the fever could be a side effect.

July 22, 2009 at 5:58 am #2487shiraMembermy mom had an ercp to have a metal stent placed a week ago, to replace the plastic one put in at the time of her diagnosis two months ago. she went in to the emergency room the next day with chills + fever. she was in the hospital on IV antibiotics for four days, then sent home with oral antibiotics. her fever has persisted and now her gall bladder is enlarged, but her bilirubin etc. are normal.
any advice? the doctors seem a little confused.
