Thank you for the responses. I wanted to be certain, so it helps to know if fever is present or any other indication. I suppose to be on the safe side, as much as I dislike it, it should be replaced every 3 months. This is also a stressful procedure in the hopes that there are no complications. I prefer to stretch the time and wait longer, but our GI doctor has now recommended every 3 months, perhaps at the same time monitor tumor growth. Since tumor growth does create problems in placing stents.

positivity……to add to Lainy’s comments: there is no set rule for stent replacements (some can go for 6 months or more). What’s of most importance is to take the temperature, daily. A consistent rise in temperature could be due to ascending cholangitis, which must be treated immediately.

Positivity, yes, it is kind of a rule of thumb as plastic stents have a tendency to get logged or infected. My husband had plastic stents and his were changed every 6 weeks to 3 months. Also it was the Oncologist who ordered it not a GI.

It is my understanding that plastic stents should be replaced no later than 3 months to avoid infection. Is this correct? A GI doctor was going to do it in 4 months and I did not think this was the right decision to wait so long. Isn’t that taking a chance or it doesn’t matter?
