We see confusion here often for several different reasons but often, like Marion said it is dehydration or having your body salts and minerals out of wack.
The true extent of this cancer cannot be determined until you are opened up. I dont know why this is true for this cancer but it is. CC is great at hiding from all types of scans so the doctors cant get a true picture until you are opened up. So dont be disheartened at your doctor, he most likely isnt ignorant, just cc is a weird cancer.
Hang in there.
KrisSeptember 16, 2010 at 5:46 pm #41707marionsModeratorminnie…..I am so sorry to hear this. I would contact his local physician re: your husband’s confusion and extreme weight loss, as it may be related to lack of hydration. Of course, only his doctor will be able to determine this. If you are not satisfied with the response of the doctor, then you always have the option of taking your husband to a local hospital. Minnie, I understand your feelings of despair. This disease is rare in comparison to the other major cancers and the majority of physicians never even treat a bile duct cancer patient. This of course compounds our fears and anxiety. However, if the surgeon feels that your husband’s cancer is confined to the bile ducts only, then that is very good news. I am hoping for things to improve and for your husband to regain some strength before the upcoming surgery. Please, stay in touch. We care.
All my best wishes,
MarionSeptember 16, 2010 at 5:44 pm #41706lainySpectatorHello Minnie and I am so sorry about this roller coaster ride you are taking. Now, I am not a doctor but if a Doctor told me he would not know if a patient is in final stages before surgery and still wants to do the surgery, I would get a second opinion rather quickly. Perhaps he said he would not know if the Cancer had spread until the surgery? Are you in a city that has a doctor who has treated CC before?
September 16, 2010 at 5:30 pm #41705pamSpectatorHi, sorry to tell you this but my dad had an attempted resection in June. The surgeon was top notch but could not remove anything. We believe my dad had, too had this cancer for a long period of time. He had bouts of the “flu” and itching skin for about a year. The cancer went undetected even though he went to the doctor several times. The recovery from the attempted resection was not easy for him. Your husband seems sicker than my dad was when he had surgery. Did he have a recent surgical clearance? I would take him to the doctor’s before next week to make sure he can still have surgery. Please post again. Will be thinking of you
September 16, 2010 at 5:09 pm #4035minnie305SpectatorI haven’t posted for awhile. My husband, Karl, diagnose 4 months ago, has had his surgery postponed two times already because of infections and weakness. Now he is rescheduled for surgery the 24th but honestly I don’t know if it will happen. They were never able to stage it, but said it appeared to be confined to the bile duct area and so that made him a candidate for surgery. The first one was scheduled for Aug. 20th, then Sept. 7th, and now the 24th The doctors said to give him a lot of protein to get his strength better and I have been giving him lots of protein shakes and other sources, as much as he will take but barely eats. He has stopped going out, barely gets out of bed except to go to the bathroom. He keeps losing weight and looks so pitiful lying there I can hardly stand it. He was diagnosed 4 months ago but I think he has had it all last winter because he had really high liver blood tests and they didn’t know what was wrong for months. I don’t know what to think any more but I guess I will find out next week when we go to the University of WA (which is 170 miles from our house) for the surgery again. He also gets periods of confusion in his mind. I’m wondering if he might be in the final stages but I don’t know what that is like. On the phone, the surgeon said it is possible but he won’t know until he does the surgery. Doesn’t anybody ever know anything with this disease? I’m about to go out of my mind. Thanks for listening.
