thormagic..does your Mom have Cholangiocarcinoma?
January 22, 2013 at 2:52 am #55234thormagicMembermy mom only weighed 127 pounds before she was diagnosed, so this was a major concern for us as she was so thin already and could not afford to lose any weight. After a few months her weight dropped to 112. She just had no appetite. We use to always go out and enjoy a nice lunch during our shopping sprees. So her quality of life changed as well because we enjoyed our lunches and dinners. Someone from this site told me about a perscription to increase your appetite. This was amazing, not only did she put on her weight, she is enjoying her food, eating like a little piglet. The medication is called megestrol. I don’t understand why the doctor never recommended this. Please check with your doctor, it worked miracles for my mom.
September 20, 2012 at 1:08 pm #55233lainySpectatorHi Michael and welcome to our site. We appreciate your input on nutrition and would like to know more about yourself. Are you in the nutrition or medical field and are you a patient or caretaker of someone with CC? As always we advise people on our Board to not make any changes in their nutrition or care without consulting their Doctor. Thanks for your input.
September 20, 2012 at 5:28 am #55232michael222SpectatorWeight gain is possible in two ways, more fat, or heavy massive muscles. The first one is not healthy and the second one is healthy choice for most of the people. So such foods that contain high protein and low fat would be best to bulk up muscles and keep you in good shape because of low fat. Strong muscles will ultimately increase body weight.

December 2, 2011 at 2:55 pm #55227gavinModeratorHi tflory,
My mum used to use the Scandishake mixes to help her put on weight. She was underweight, not CC related and needed to put weight on. She used the powders that you mixed up with milk to sort of make like a pudding and she thought they were okay, plus they worked as well. She didn’t use them as meal replacements but as supplements as an extra in her diet. Plus my dad would have them sometimes also when he wasn’t feeling like eating a meal. I think you can mix the powders up with cream instead of milk as well for extra calorie intake. Are these the same as the ones that you’ve just received? I hope that your husband likes them and that they help.
Best wishes,
Gavin
December 2, 2011 at 12:32 pm #55226tfloryMemberHi everyone! I just received the samples from Scandishake yesterday. They sent me three full size packets of their shake mixes and a full size can of their scandical. We haven’t tried them yet, but I am very impressed with what they sent.
Definitely worth trying and their prices aren’t too bad.November 30, 2011 at 3:03 pm #55225gavinModeratorThanks for this information tflori.

All my best wishes,
MarionNovember 29, 2011 at 7:22 pm #5988tfloryMemberI posted this info on another thread and Marion asked me to place it here.Hope its useful. My husband has lost 52 pounds and we have the same problem with the ensure plus. we then tried Carnation instant breakfast. This upset his stomach, maybe too much dairy. This site gave me some great nutrition references. I used them to do some searching on my own and here is what I found. Nestle makes a product called benecalorie and boost resource breeze . I emailed them, they do not offer samples, but you can order thorugh thier website. Abbott Laboratories makes the Ensure products. I emailed them for samples. They sent me an email with a 1 800 #. After calling and talking to Amanda who was soo helpful, she is sending me samples of Ensure Enlive which is a fruit based supplement. She also told me of a flavorless powder called Polycose you can mix in and a fruit punch flavored liquid called Promod. Everything can be ordered from their website or she said your local pharmacy can special order it for you. Their number is 1-800-986-8926 , I don’t know if this will work for you, since you are in Canada, but you can try. I also contacted a company that makes a product called Scandishake. They have great recipes on their sites for things besides just shakes. They also make a sprinkle on calorie booster called Scandical. They are sending me samples of both. The number is 1-800-472-2634, they are based out of Alabama. This is all I have found on the internet. Of course, almost everything has to be special ordered and isn’t cheap. As for the steroids, My husband takes decadron two a day for three days after chemo and just recently added on days four and five one pill to help with the nausea. They do help with the appetite. We all take enzymes at our home to aid digestion sometimes. We especially like Papaya enzyme plus that I get at the health food store. It has mint and chlorophyll added to help upset tummies. Hope this info helps.
