April 28, 2011 at 8:48 am #49115philipMemberHi Jenny Lou – I just read your post and while my reply may be late/irrelevant at this point I offer the following:
I am originally from Toronto, now living near Calgary and was diagnosed with CC December 21, 2010. In researching this rare disease I noted that it was 7 times more common in Israel and so I figured that an Israeli surgeon would likely be most familiar/experienced in this area. A family friend was able to contact Dr. Laurie Blendes – a liver specialist of world repute – on my behalf; formerly of Toronto and now living in Israel Blendes is familiar with the capabilities in both countries and indeed the world as this is his area. He advised that the best team is actually in Toronto at the Toronto General; it was led by Dr. Bernie Langer until his recent retirement and now is led by Dr. Bryce Taylor and Dr. Paul Grieg. Blendes advises that they can provide not only the best surgical experience re the liver but have the medical and transplant backup depending what proves necessary.
I hope this information is of some help to you and your father.

I just want to echo really what Marion has said to you in that you are doing everything right for your dad here. I was my dads carer during his fight with CC and I know how hard it is, and your dad will be so very proud of you and also grateful for what you are doing for him. The more information you have the better decisions you can make and you are doing everything possible to find out all that you can. Please let us know how the meeting with Dr Hanna goes.
Best wishes to you and your dad,
Gavin
March 29, 2011 at 5:03 am #49113marionsModeratorJenny….It is my opinion that you are doing everything right. By consulting with Dr. Hanna you will be able to compare the approaches taken by either surgeon. I would make a decision following the consultation with him. And, if conflicting information should arise then definitely, I would consult with one other surgeon specializing in CC resections. You are a wonderful advocate for you Dad.
All my best wishes,
MarionMarch 29, 2011 at 3:34 am #49112jennylouMemberThank-you for your replies! It is a great comfort to connect with each of you.
I have learned that my Dad’s surgeon finished his surgical residency 3 years ago and is now the liver specialist at Trillium. Dr. Garzon has performed 30 CC surgeries a year for two years. He studied under a surgical oncologist in Toronto who specializes in biliary cancers. I’ve actually contacted that surgeon, Dr. Hanna and we may be seeing him for a second opinion for the surgery itself.
Could you offer me your opinions on the extent of Dr. Garzon’s experience? The cancer is so rare that I wouldn’t expect a surgeon to be performing this surgery several times a week but just the same do you think his surgical experience sounds like it is enough?
March 28, 2011 at 1:16 pm #49111lainySpectatorHello Jenny and welcome to our wonderful family but sorry you had to join us.
Your dad has jumped the big hurdle by becoming a candidate for surgery. That is the best news. It is very important to know if the Oncologist/Surgeon has experience with CC. I know you will be hearing from some of our Canadian members today. At the top of the page is a search engine where you can put in Dr. Cleary’s name and see if it comes up in any posts here. Wishing your dad the best of luck and please keep us posted.March 28, 2011 at 11:05 am #49110gavinModeratorHi Jenny,
Welcome to the site. Sorry that you had to find us all and I’m sorry to hear about your dad as well, but I am glad that you have joined us all as you will get a lot of support from all of us. And feel free to ask any more questions that you have and I konw that everyone here will do what they can to help. Marion has given you some great links and I hope that they will be of use to you and your dad. And we have many members here from Canada and I am sure that they and others wil also be along soon to welcome you as well.
That is great that your dad is a candidate for surgery and yes, the skill of the surgeon is imperative as is the surgeons experience in dealing with patients with CC. Please let us know how you get on with finding a surgeon and how everything goes for your dad. We are all here for you.
My best wishes to you and your dad,
Gavin

MarionMarch 28, 2011 at 4:49 am #49108jennylouMemberThank you Marion! I have just sent an e-mail to Dr. Cleary. My Dad is a candidate for surgery and from what I understand the skill of the surgeon is imperative – the surgeon he is currently seeing may have performed this surgery lots of times but we actually don’t know yet if that’s the case, there are still so many questions we’re waiting to have answered. Your prompt reply has really helped, thank you!
