No, I was very fortunate, it had not metastasized and I’ve been clean so far. I was left with 50% of my liver, which was the minimum Dr. Kato wanted to see. I had chemo following surgery (six months of Gemzar), but not before. I think you would be impressed with NYP’s Digestive Diseases group. They do a ton of liver transplants and complex surgeries. This link provides are very brief summary of Dr. Kato’s experience:

Had your cancer metastized before the surgery?March 23, 2011 at 6:45 pm #49002jim-wildeMemberPeony, I had a successful surgery (left hepatic lobe resection) almost two years ago with Dr. Tomoaki Kato at NY Presbyterian. Complete contact info is here:

It was only after my surgery that I realized Dr. Kato’s world wide reputation. He’s a straight shooter and won’t mislead you about risks, etc. He won’t have a problem with being an additional opinion.
March 21, 2011 at 11:04 pm #49001peonyMemberHi Aida and Lulu. Thanks for responding.
Aida, the dr. is Myron Schwartz from Mount Sinai.
Has your fathers cancer metastisized?Lulu, my husbands mets are in his spine so no chance that the reports were read incorrectly. They biopsied his spine and confirmed adenocarcinoma. I think we will get another opinion. The oncologist is vehemently against the surgery. We need a tie breaker vote!.
Will keep you posted and happy to hear you are doing so well.
Best,

before seeing him I was treated at another very reputable cancer center….last hurdle I needed to jump was PET scan before surgery because my tumor had not spread from the right side of my liver also…Findings on PET showed areas that lit up in my chest…they had told me the cancer had spread and metastisized…fast forward went for 2nd opinion with Dr. Schwartz he looked at all my studies…he thought the cancer had not spread and areas of uptake were most likely from stenting procedures to release the bile that had collected. They do go through your chest when they stent at least they did with me. I did a CT same day with Dr. Schwartz he was correct…he operated last Jan. my last scan was clear and everything that had been in my chest is gone. Did Dr. Schwartz order a CT that day? If you are not comfortable with his findings perhaps a 3rd opinion would help. At any rate just being considered a candidate for surgery is huge. Best of luck to you and your husband I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers and please keep us updated. Forgot to add that yes I did have 5 treatments of Gem/Cis prior to seeing Dr. Schwartz he felt that it may have benefited some.March 21, 2011 at 2:48 am #48999aidaSpectatorBest wishes to your husband. I hope his surgery is a huge success.
We’re hoping my dad’s tumor(s) have shrunk enough after chemo for him to have surgery as well. Is your husband’s surgeon Dr. Gary Shwartz at Sloan-Kettering?
Again, best of luck to him.
March 21, 2011 at 12:29 am #4925peonyMemberMy husband saw Dr. Schwartz on Friday and he says that Don is a candidate for surgery because his tumors (3) are all In 1 lobe of the liver. And the mets to his spine have did not light up on his last PET scan.
I find this all very confusing!!!! Even though the his mets don’t light up his cancer has still metastized.
Has anyone had surgery after mets and post chemo? -
