Donna…ascities (fluid buildup) frequently accompanies this disease. Elevating the legs may be helpful. We have many discussions which you may find by using the search function (top, right hand side of task bar.) At times, a therapeutic paracentesis can be performed in order to elevate the discomfort caused by the fluid retention. I am wishing for your husband to get some relief real soon.
Best wishes coming your way,

March 16, 2010 at 12:32 am #36445donna9MemberHello all, I am also new here. my husband Jim has stage 4 pancreatic cancer mets to liver. He had the whipple surgery and is now taking gemzar 3 weeks on 1 week off. He all of a sudden noticed foot and leg swelling. They are 5 times the regular size. We saw the oncologist to day and he was given lasix and potassium. We have been using ice and elevation. Our pcp said it could be a blockage. He says we have to give the medication time to see if it works.
THIS IS A VERY MEAN CANCER….. Thanks DonnaMarch 11, 2010 at 6:36 am #36444jennifersMemberI feel the same way (finding another family) after joining just a few days ago…. a family that truly understands everything that is going on, what you are going through, and can relate to the many emotions and the whirlwind we are all flying though…. it’s amazing.
March 11, 2010 at 4:34 am #36443sdugginsMemberWow, Thank you to eveyone. I have visited this site many times during the last year but never could quite bring myself to join but last night I was led to. The support is overwhelming !!!! mlep0416, thank you for the laugh whch I greatly needed… Roger is on oxicodone for pain but only takes 1 or 2 a day. To our knowldge Roger is not a diabetic but I will ask our medical doctor to check that. I am going to check with his Oncologist tomorrow and request a pet Scan just to see if there are other issues that could be causing the swelling as well as check on getting the teds. Thank you all again and know each one of you are in our prayers. I feel like I have found another family….
March 10, 2010 at 6:43 pm #36442lalupesSpectatorHello, Sharon!! The others have given you lots of advice already & there’s not much I can add at the moment, but I wanted to join them in welcoming you to the BEST bunch of people you could hope to find for help & support.
Please let us know how you & your husband get on with the treatment for his swelling. My sister’s on Gem/Cis & she gets very frustrated because of shortness of memory & constant sweating, at various stages in the chemo cycle.

March 10, 2010 at 6:35 pm #36441cinnaminSpectatorHello Sharon, My Dad’s feet and legs swelled right after his surgery. His feet were so swollen they turned purple. He was also given Lasix, but I’m not convinced that’s what took the swelling down. I actually massaged his feet a couple of times a day, and that brought him some relief and took the purple out. We also used the Teds…support tights for his legs and feet.
Keep us posted, and best wishes to you and your husband!

March 10, 2010 at 6:24 pm #36440gavinModeratorHi Sharon,
Welcome to the site although I am sorry that you have to be here. Please keep coming back as you will get so much support and help from us all. Ask any and all questions that you will have and I am sure that you will find answers here from someone who can help.
I was my dads carer during his fight with CC and he also had trouble remembering things. We don’t know exactly what caused it for certain, it could have been the pain meds that he was on, or his tiredness and lack of sleep. Dad also had trouble with swelling in his legs and feet and I think this was down to lower Albumin levels. I hope you can get some help here for husband with his swelling and my best wishes to you both.

March 10, 2010 at 1:05 pm #36439lainySpectatorHello Sharon and WELCOME to our wonderful Family. I cannot add to the above except to tell you that we don’t listen to statistics or “expiration dates”. We have people on our Board who have out lived their “dates”. We have HOPE and Attitude, best RX in the world and a dynamite duo. Hope you find the answer to the swelling and please keep us posted.
March 10, 2010 at 12:49 pm #36438jeffgriederMemberMarc had the swelling in his feet and legs as well. Not sure what caused it. Though it is interesting what Margaret says about the Vicodin. Marc was on that at first, but it upset his stomach and they immediately changed his pain killer. The swelling did not start until after they took out the external drainage bag and put in the stent a week after that. They also put Marc on Lasek. However, the swelling did not go away until last week after his chemo treatment and they sent him home with a pair of Therapeutic Support Knee High Socks. Those really helped get rid of his swelling.
March 10, 2010 at 9:21 am #36437magicSpectatorSharon,that was great you had that extra time, but I feel perhaps your husbands condition is worsening. He needs a proper review, because lasix alone can create other problems and needs very careful monitoring.Keep at them!
JanetMarch 10, 2010 at 5:19 am #36436marionsModeratorHello Sduggins….I would like to follow Margaret in welcoming you to our site. Swelling of legs, feet and abdomen has been discussed, on this board, numerous times. You may find several previous postings by using the google search function by entering either, ascities, or swelling. We have seen, on this board, that Lasix can substantially reduce the fluid retention however, it might be beneficial to have another appointment sooner than a few weeks from now. A pet scan may determine the cause.
I am sending all my best wishes,

Welcome to the best CC site on the internet. Like me, I’m certain that you did not want to join. But now that you are here, be prepared for many others to chime in and offer words of support and encouragment.
My husband Tom was diagnosed with CC in March ’08, had a successful liver resection in June ’08 and was considered cancer free. In Nov ’09 he started turning yellow. He has a reoccurance of a biliary tumor, 2.5 cm and this one is inoperable.
Tom has experienced many things during his journey, and his feet started to swell until they were about 4 times normal size. We could not figure out what was causing it until he went off the pain killers. He was taking vicodin and when he stopped that his swelling went away. That is a weird side effect to have, but nontheless, it happened, so no more vicodin for him! Is your husband on any pain killers? If so, it could be one of the side effects.
Is your husband diabetic? The only time that Tom has ‘night sweats’ is when his blood sugars go too low. You may want to check out your husbands blood glucose levels if you have a tester.
After Tom’s reoccurance his original oncologist gave him 6 months. We are now at month 4 and seriously hoping to beat that 6 months diagnosis. I pulled down Tom’s pants and checked his butt for that expiration date and did not find one!!!!
Good luck to you and prayers are coming your husband’s way from Wisconsin!
Go with God and KEEP KICKIN’ THAT cancer.
Margaret (My husband and Cholangiocarcinoma)
March 10, 2010 at 2:14 am #3293sdugginsMemberMy name is Sharon and my husband was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma in October of 2008 and scheduled for a liver resection in November of 2008. Unfortunatly after 11 hours of trying to remove the tumor they were unsuccessful. In January of 2009 we went to MD Anderson in hopes they would be able to perform the surgery sucessfully but after many test, they determined they would not be able to do surgery. Later in January my husband started Chemo (Gemcitabine) . At that point we were told he had a little over 9 months according to medical information, but praise the Lord, he has made it 13 months and we truly feel blessed. Up until the past month the turmor has been stable or had not shown significant change. He has had the normal side affects of weakness as well as pain and discoloration of his feet. Other than that you would not know he was sick. His last CT Scan showed a spot on his liver and since them we have noticed many changes. At times he has trouble remembering and some night sweats but the most concerning is the swelling. He is having swelling in his feet, legs hand and face which has been going on for about 4 weeks but seems to be getting worse. We saw the PA at the Cancer Center today and she gave him a perscription for Lasek and stated he may need to have additional test in the next few weeks if the swelling did not go away. Has anyone experienced this?
