I would think, yes get the swine flu vaccination but is it available yet?We were expecting it soon as health workers in the southern hemisphere.I think if you have a compromised immune system and everyone on chemo does you have all the flu vaccines Janet
September 5, 2009 at 2:09 am #31078debrahSpectatorHi Kris, my son had his physical today and I asked our doctor what she thought about the shot . She told me that it was no more dangerous than the ‘regular’ flu shot because it is made in the same way as any other flu shot. She said because no one knows ‘how much’ flu vaccine will be available that it will be given to those ‘at most risk’…she said that ‘ she will’ get the shot for herself as soon as it is available and that it is being recommended for those from 6 years old to 24 years old because they are the ones most likeley to be exposed to the virus. They are not recommending it for the elderly not because of any risk but because they are at least risk of being exposed to it. But I did not asked specifically if I should get it because my son was being goofy and I could not think straight. The nurse told me as I was leaving to call in the first week of October because they were getting the flu shots in as early as they can….I always get a flu shot and have never had any negative reactions to it, thank God. Now don’t feel silly feel that you are asking questions to be an educated consumer, now how did that sound? educated? Ok I am just being silly. Hope it was of some help and I hope you are feeling well. deb i
September 4, 2009 at 4:03 am #31077ireneaMemberHi —
I’ve been thinking about issue as well. I did have last year’s flu shot without complication, and I certainly think that those of us with CC should be priority for vaccine since CC does seem to weaken and allow attacks on our immune systems.
IreneSeptember 3, 2009 at 10:17 pm #31076lainySpectatorHee, hee! Is that like which came first the chicken or the egg????? So true, Ron.
September 3, 2009 at 8:51 pm #31075ron-smithMemberHi Kris
I believe I will be getting the Tamiflu vaccine next month when they start it in the UK.
Question – Am I more at risk sitting in a packed doctors’ waiting room waiting for my vaccination or staying at home and not getting the vaccine?
All the best
Ron
September 3, 2009 at 4:00 pm #31074lainySpectatorCan’t help as I have not had a flu shot in 3 years. The last one made me so sick, I have not taken the shot nor have I had a flu or cold in that time. Don’t laugh but I attribute it a lot to one little thing I do. I do not use any pens that are not mine when out shopping. Like to sign for anything. I always use my own pen. One day I just started thinking about all the people handling those pens! Also for your info saw a doctor interviewed on CNN and he said the alcohol hand rubs are much better than soap and water. That is my grandmotherly advise for today.
September 3, 2009 at 3:30 pm #31073lisaSpectatorI would think that you are deemed critical, and would ask for a swine flu shot. I’m going to ask for one.
September 3, 2009 at 11:19 am #31072marionsModeratorKris…that is a good question and I will try to find some answers, also. You are indespensable and deemed critical also.
Hugs to both of you,
MarionSeptember 2, 2009 at 7:05 pm #2638devoncatSpectatorI am wondering if I fall into the group that needs to get a vaccine. Gemzar has made my white blood cells plummet BIG TIME. I know this is silly, but I dont want to ask my doctor about it because I dont want to come across as a crazy American. How silly is that? Hans is getting one because his job is deemed critical, so that is good. But are any of you getting one or has it been suggested by your doctor? I will talk to my doctor about it if I need to, but not until I know what is being suggested in the US and UK for cancer patients.
Kris
