I agree that it is good to have an agressive approach to getting the mets when you are young enough and strong enough to withstand the surgery and recovery.

I am glad surgery is being considered again. It must make you feel better. Short answer, my doctors have always planned and still work for me getting surgery on my peritoneal mets. Rick, I think we are near the same age group. I think that doctors are more likely to whack us with everything they got and possibly bend the “rules” a bit. Suzanne (also in our age group) has experienced this as well…at least from my perspective. So where doctors usually might not go after mets in a 70 yr old patient, they might with us given our age and ability to heal better.Kris

Yes I am using a port – have been since day 1. I wish it was as easy as that!!!
I met with my oncologist today and he wants to give it another shot with the Oxaliplatin. He feels that it is working too well to discontinue it without another try and more preventative measures. My CA 19-9 has gone way down and there has been good improvement in scans as well so I tend to agree with him!!!
So – he is having me take 20mg of Prednisone the night before Oxaliplatin treatment, plus 20mg the morning of treatment. They are also giving me a different type of steriod through IV right before my treatment. He thinks that this will prevent another reaction and gives me fairly good odds that it wouldn’t happen again. Nonetheless, he is having me watched closely for the next treatment.
I am happy with his plan and agree it is worth the risk. We’ll see what happens! We also talked about the possibility for having surgery on the peritoneal mets. He told me that there is a surgeon who is agressive that he could refer me to but thinks that I need to show some more improvement before it would be considered. I think that would be great if we could get rid of the mets because it seems like it would open up some more options for the primary tumor (a fairly small klatskin). Have any of you heard of surgery to remove peritoneal mets?

I had the same reaction when given through my arm. After the port was installed, they tried agan and no reaction. Are you using a port?Kris
January 6, 2010 at 2:23 am #34204ashleySpectatorHi Rick,
Will your doc let you try the chemo again, even at a lower dose? I wonder why no reaction for months and now there is one. Do the docs have any explanation?
Sending you my best,
ashleyJanuary 5, 2010 at 11:49 pm #34203lisaSpectatorRick, I had the same reaction, so you are not the onnly one. Good luck with your treatments.
January 5, 2010 at 8:08 pm #34202marionsModeratorRick…I can relate to your frustration however, we have seen similar reactions on this board many times before. I would assume that another therapy will be recommended once your symptoms have cleared up. Hang in there.
Best wishes,
MarionJanuary 5, 2010 at 6:47 pm #3054rick-kampMemberI was really bummed. About about 45 minutes of Oxaliplatin infusion I started to have a reation to it; flushness/red face and neck, hives, severe itching. The chemo was then stopped and I didn’t even get to start the Gemzar because the Dr. wanted to send me know after the reaction.
But I’m concered that the Oxaliplatin with now be discontiued because of the reaction and it seemed to be working so well. My CA 19-9 has come down by over 70% and my CT scan cannot detect any cancer after I had been on the Gemzar/Oxaliplatin combo. Now if I stop the Oxaliplatin I doubt it will continue to be as effective. I was just starting to get optimistic that this combo of drugs might be doing the trick and at least be extending life significantly and improving quality as well! So frustrating!!!!!
