Hey, Byron, the best mule ride is right here at the Grand Canyon! Did you know that they train the mules in the late evening? They blindfold them and have them walk down the Canyon to the bottom! If I was on them you would have to blindfold me!!!!
January 18, 2012 at 10:10 pm #54918mustangmortSpectatorThanks so much, all. Michael, my next hitching post may be in Hawaii. going to take a mule ride while I’m there.
January 17, 2012 at 9:03 pm #54917walkingthepathMemberRX of Hawaii may be just the trick to put your recovery back in gear. And even if not – what the heck – you’re going to Hawaii!
You’ve made me rethink my priorities – I’m taking my family to Europe this summer come hell or high water.
All the best to you, Byron. Stay high in the saddle and I’ll meet you at the next hitching post.

January 16, 2012 at 6:30 am #54892peggypMemberHi Byron,
Sorry to hear about what all you have been through lately. Glad to see you are back posting. Hawaii sounds like just what you need. I hope you and your wife will have a lovely time while there. My husband just had scans done, and his tumors have grown since October. His oncologist is trying to figure out what our next course of action will be. So, just hang in there and keep fighting the fight and I will keep you in my prayers. PeggyP
January 13, 2012 at 8:47 pm #54916mustangmortSpectatorVacation might not happen until end of March or into April. We talked with interventional radiologist today and discussed both radio and chemo embolization. He suggested doing the radio first, so I am considering that. We’re trying to get a handle on why my liver enzymes spiked suddenly last week. They were still up today. They aren’t terribly high………Doctor said on the “Low” side of high.(in the 200’s). Bilirubin still normal.
Really looking forward to this 3-day weekend.
January 13, 2012 at 1:58 am #54915dianecSpectatorDearest Byron — your wife is a gem. She knows what’s best for her precious husband. Go and enjoy yourself. Please keep us posted on all the details of this upcoming spring vacation.
xoxo

I am really sorry for all the hard times you have suffered lately. I think you will have a wonderful time in Hawaii. You deserve a lovely trip with your wife. I hope you come back all rested and refreshed. I also hope the doctors can come up with a new game plan that will kick your cancer’s butt! Much love to you and your family. Safe travels my friend.

January 12, 2012 at 5:15 am #54912marionsModeratorAloha Byron…..It is exactly what a wife would order. You need it – you deserve it- your blood count will benefit greatly and the weather is not bad either.
All my best wishes,
MarionJanuary 12, 2012 at 3:47 am #54911hamptonsarasotaMemberByron,
Wanted to thank you for the warm welcome on my ‘introduction’ post first off. Second, go to Hawaii! We’ve never been, but my mother in law has several times and you may as well, right? Wish you serious luck and positive vibes on the ‘alternative modalities’ that you’ll be trying. Wish you the best…January 11, 2012 at 9:51 pm #54910lainySpectatorByron, I am so very sorry for all you have had to go through and right now I think your wife came up with the best RX! HAWAII!!! I did the same thing with Teddy. It was for his 75th and he had never been there and his wish was to see Pearl Harbor.
We had an amazing time!!! We cruised it as it was easier on him that way and it was FAB even though I got stung by a Portugese Man-o-War on a beach in Kauai. I was told later if Teddy had just ‘peed’ on my foot it would not have stung for 12 hours!!! The things I suffered with to not see him go to jail for indecent exposure! I sure hope you take this trip and perhaps I will crawl into your luggage! Now, feel better ya hear????January 11, 2012 at 9:30 pm #54909mustangmortSpectatorWell, the first part of December I had 1 more round of chemo (gem/cis) and then they took new abdominal MRI with contrast. The surgeon told me that there were 3 new spots (tumors) in my liver and that I was now officially inoperable. The onc said there was not much difference between September and December in the scans. They both agreed, however, that the chemo was not doing what it should and could. Then, the week before Christmas I was really feeling lousy……half dead. One day my chest started pounding and hurting. My lower back was also pounding and hurting (bad low back). I went to my primary care doctor thinking it was connected to the high blood pressure medicine I had just started. After getting me checked out, they sent me via ambulance to the ER (standard heart protocol). They did blood tests, ct scans and blood tests again after a few hours. Could find no heart problems. The ER doc said it was probably pericarditis and I should schedule visit with a cardiologist. Next day I reported this to ONc’s office. They ordered all lab and scans from the other hospital and immediately identified the problem…………
Severe low white counts (I had neutropenia) and low red counts as well. All the symptoms fit. I had informed the ER that I was a cancer patient and had been through chemo but they never even mentioned the low blood counts. They were SOOOOOOO focused on finding a heart problem.Anyway, white counts came up quite quickly but it has taken the red counts several week to finally approach normal. Onc suggested a 2 months chemo holiday since I had such a bad time after only 5 chemo treatments. At that time we will scan again and then possibly do a chemo embolization to the liver and then possibly radiation to the large cyst/enlarged lymph nodes in the perihepatic area.
So, for the next 2 months I’m very anxious to show me (and them) what some alternative modalities can accomplish in a few weeks.
Meanwhile, my wife wants to take me to Hawaii for 2 weeks later in the spring. (Tahiti was too expensive). :0)
December 10, 2011 at 2:00 am #54908peonyMemberHi Byron,
I was so shocked to read your post about what you have been thru this past month. I’m glad you are feeling better and continue to fight the fight.
Hang in there and stay strong.

PeonyDecember 3, 2011 at 8:16 pm #54907mlepp0416SpectatorI had to chuckle at the ‘reduced brain function’ comments. My Tom experienced that when he was on chemo also. It’s called “Chemo Brain” and you can actually look it up. I remember Tom always asking for “Bounce” when he meant “Boost”.

Just like with cancer, I am totally prepared to used reduced brain function to the fullest extent possible. totally not responsible for anything any more. :0)
