    Hi Katherine,

I hope the hospital bed will help with keeping your mums legs elevated. My dad also had trouble with swelling in his lower legs and feet and his albumin levels were very low. He used to like to sit in his chair with his feet up and that seemed to help a bit. And my mum is also called Eleanor!

My best wishes to you and your mum,

    Gavin

Thank you so much for the kind words and suggestions. I will continue to rub my mom’s legs. A hospital bed arrived today that should help elevate her legs more.

You all are a total blessing to both me and my mom Eleanor.

Hello Katherine – I’m sorry the chemo’s too toxic for your mum. Please give her my very best wishes. I always love it when I see her picture pop up when I log on. She sounds a real fighter!!! :D

Hi,yes it is uncomfortable the oedema in the feet etc.I am not sure the high doses of lasix are good,it is a lot of stress on the body and doesnt seem to do that much.Elevation of course and the low albumin is probably a factor so eating ice creametc may help. There is a massage that can help.
I think low doses of diuretics are better, good luck Janet

Katherine, I’m not certain exactly what ‘non-pitting’ edema of the legs is, but my hubby Tom has edema of his feet and lower legs. Have the docs checked the Albumin levels? Tom’s is very low which they say is causing the edema. They can give an injection/infusion of Albumin but it’s only a short term solution. The way it was explained to us is that the fluid is ‘leaking’ from the blood vessels. In Tom’s case, his bilirubin is so high (22.7 at last blood work) that his kidney’s are working overtime to try and flush the bilirubin from his system.

The best solution they gave us was to wear compression stockings and to keep his feet elevated higher than his heart as much as possible. I also rub is feet legs a couple of times a day, this does give him some relief from the pain the edema causes. (he normally has pretty skinny feet so it’s weird to see them so bloated, in fact, they are so large now that he can’t get his normal shoes on!)

Keep asking questions and reading the posts on this site. The more informed you are the better, and remember, the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask!

Go with God and KEEP KICKIN’ THAT cancer.

Hello Katherine…..This is what I have learned: Non-pitting edema of the legs is difficult to treat. Diuretic medications are generally not effective, although elevation of the legs periodically during the day and compressive devices may reduce the swelling.
I am so sorry to hear that you Mom had to discontinue the Xeloda. Last I had heard from your Mom was in September. She had spoken of extreme fatigue. Please, give her my love.
and many hugs coming your way,
    Marion

    Katherine,
I am sorry your mother did not respond well to the chemo. I have no hints but hopefully someone will be along shortly to help. Your mother is lucky she has a knowledgble daughter to help her through this.

    Stay strong.

Hello all those touched by CC:

I am writing for my mom Eleanor Williams (BostonDogMom). Mom is now hospice care as the chemo she was taking was too toxic. No more active treatment for her. I am a nursing instructor and am able to help her the majority of the time. Another friend who is also an RN cares for her the brief times I need to teach.

Does anyone have suggestions for comfort for pitting edema in lower extremities? That seems to cause the most discomfort. She is taking high doses of Lasix.

For her continued nausea, Haldol and compazine suppositories have been really helping.

We both have really appreciated the support from this site.

My mom is such a warrior, never complaining and worrying about everyone else except for her.

Warmly and feeling prayers at all times,
    Katherine Conrad
