Jose,
I truly send all my love to you and your sister. God bless you both.May 12, 2012 at 8:57 pm #60964jmgrisoliaMemberThank you very much to all of you for these kind words and this support. Doctors offer a paracentesis and this is fine since it improves her quality of life, however my point is about these sudden signs of recovery following by this dramatic worsening. Now, in the night she always asks my brother in law, makes him to swear that she will be alive at the next morning. It’s simply heartbreaking.

May 12, 2012 at 8:48 pm #60963gavinModeratorDear Jose,
I am sorry to hear what your sister is going through right now and I am so hoping that she will bounce back from this latest satback for her. I can’t offer any personal experiences with chemo as my dad never went through that during his fight with CC. But Like Lainy says, a rollercoaster, yes I can so relate to that and that and the description of the up’s and down’s with this cancer is so very true.
My dad went through a ton of both the up’s and down’s along the way and during these periods, he felt good then not so good. And for us, it is so hard to watch our loved ones go through this and it hits us hard I know. I am wondering if your sisters doctors have talked with you all about doing something for her swollen abdomen? There are things that can be done for this and maybe it is something that your sister or yourself could discuss with the doctors?
We so know how you are feeling right now. Please do not give up hope and I am hoping that your sister will bounce back from this again like she has done before. We are all here for you and please stay in touch with us.
My best wishes to you and your sister,
Gavin

That is why it is such a roller coaster ride and also why we just don’t give up as someone will be down and then they are up! I call it a roller coaster ride that no one wants a ticket to. I also truly feel that CC patients are the most courageous and heroic people in the world! Is she now in Madrid? I am wishing for the best for your Sister!

As you may know by now, I am only a patient like your sister and nothing else.
If your sister has previous health issues ,the side effects of the chemotherapy may be occur differently than the normal.(ie: appear earlier or later;or at different times);for this part, that is related to your sister’s health status before and/or during the treatment ,I cannot tell you what to expect about this up and down problem.
However,to answer your question about the swelling I can do that.
If your sister is on GEMOX; Periphral edema(20%) and edema (13%) are the side effects from gemcitabine and oxaliplatin(10%,15% in that order) .
Oxaliplatin cause depression in about 9% and anxiety in about 5% of the patient when give with 5FU.
God bless.May 12, 2012 at 5:31 pm #6819jmgrisoliaMemberDear friends,
Just few weeks ago we thought it was the end. We then decided to move out to Madrid to make her treated in another hospital with a reputed team in this disease. For some magic reason and before taking any treatment (she was in the middle of two cycles, in the resting period) her swelling abdomen begun to diminish dramatically, her appetite improved and general wellbeing improved. We then went for the blood test prior to a new cycle of chemo (sixth) and some biomarkers showed a remarkable tendency to drop. The doctor, seeing these results, considered that she was candidate to radioembolization or whatever the word in English. Then just after chemo things begun to be uglier: her swelling abdomen grew and grew everyday, her mood went down and she was clearly worsening in any aspect. We are hoping that after a while she will be better and better has happened before. I just wanted to show this with you. What is your impression? Are we right to hope a recovery? Perhaps there is a pattern of ups and downs in this illness; perhaps it is something related to the chemo. What do you think?
