The VA has identified specific activities in which veterans may have been exposed to ionizing radiation, some of which include military service in Japan during World War II and atmospheric nuclear weapons testing from 1945 to 1962. A veteran who has participated in a radiation-risk activity as defined by the VA and who develops one or more of the following cancers is eligible for benefits, such as medical treatment and disability compensation. However, a veteran has to be able to document exposure to specific radiation activities during his or her military service to receive benefits from the VA.
