I would rather have them look at me like I was crazy then the way they did when they told me I had it!! Please check it out!! No knowing does not make it less real!

Eli…It is my opinion that it takes a much larger control group to postively confirm a genetic predispostion for this cancer. As long as I read the words “can” and “may be” I would like to see follow-up studies confirming the suspicion of heredity.

    A point of clarification:

A very small number of CC cases can be caused by inherited genetic disorders. See this paper:

    Hereditary Pancreatic and Hepatobiliary Cancers
    http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ijso/2011/154673/

Jump to section 3.2.1. It talks about three rare, inherited, genetic disorders that may be responsible for CC:

    Lynch Syndrome (HNPCC)
    Muir-Torre Syndrome
    Bile salt export pump deficiency

That said, the vast majority of CC cases are not inherited.

As I mentioned before, my wife and I had a consultation in the genetic clinic. You can read about our experience here:

    http://www.cholangiocarcinoma.org/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=7960

We are still waiting for genetic test results.

Ashley….I agree with the others – CC is not hereditary.
Although we don’t like to admit it – caring for a loved one with this or any other life threatening illness causes enormous stress on our minds and bodies. This article by Cancer/net offers some helpful tips for stress reduction:
    http://www.cancer.net/patient/All+About+Cancer/Cancer.Net+Feature+Articles/Quality+of+Life/Managing+Stress

Additionally, when we lose a loved to an illness we become acutely aware of our own mortality.
Ashley, with time your body and mind will heal. There is nothing wrong with seeing a doctor for your concerns.
Please know that I will be thinking of your Mom this Sunday.
    Hugs,
    Marion

    Hi Ashley,

Like the others have said, if you’re not happy with your doctor or his attitude then go and see someone else if you can. And from what you have told us, it sounds like his attitude is not the best to say the least. I don’t think you are being paraniod or over reacting, so go get it checked out preferrable with a a doctor with a more caring attitude. As to what the onc told you about CC being hereditary, I understand that CC is not hereditary and I find it strange that the onc would tell you this. If I am wrong about this then hopefully someone will correct me, but I would say that it is not hereditary.

    Hugs,

    Gavin

    Ashley,
I had the same pain you did…. it was constant, it was painful, and it freaked me out. It was under my ribs and I also felt it in my chest. Turns out I’m just a little bit crazy, which is okay with me :). After going for tests with a surgeon including a CT and a HIDA scan, I was told that I am perfectly healthy, and my organs all look great. I may have been having good old-fashioned gallbladder attacks, but nothing major showed up except a small polyp in the gallbladder.

I refused to believe that the pain was in my head, but once I was told I was okay, the pain really did start to go away. I have a 2.5 year old as well, and the thought of not being around for her is enough to send me into a tail-spin. I started going to accupuncture and learned a lot about how people carry stress. Some are outwardly stressed – it’s clear when they are upset. I’m not one of them…. I carry my stress inside. I always seem to be “with it”, but my organs feel the brunt of what I am going through, hence the upper quadrant and chest pain I was feeling after Dad passed away. It’s not as healthy a way to carry stress and I’m working on it. In my opinion, I would say go to the doctor and tell them you want to get checked. If it IS something, we all know the sooner you find out the better. If it’s NOT, I bet you’ll start to feel better anyway :)

    Thinking of you.

I agree with Kris. Go see someone if for nothing else peace of mind. I also have not ever heard of CC being herditary. Best of luck on it all and please let us know what happens.

Go to your primary and tell them that your mom was diagnsed with cc. Although I’ve never heard it’s hereditary, tell your dr. that’s what you were told. Explain the pains and say you want at lest an ultrasound if not a CT scan of the area. With cancer in the family you should be covered under insurance, too. Hopefully, anyway.
