    Lainy,
After finding this board eight or nine months, ago, I feel like I know so many of you. It has been so good for me.

Happy Anniversary to you and Teddy and I wish you many more.

Jim was also on a low dose cholesteral med. Maybe that somehow triggers something???? Who knows. It is all so rare and unpredictable that it is really hard to know.

Happy Anniversary Lainy & Teddy! No matter what, togetherness is a good thing. :)

Rowena, it is a guessing game isn’t it? I have been on Lipitor for years and Teddy got the CC, I got another rare kind called a GIST. Perhaps there has been too much togetherness in our marriage? Our 16th is tomorrow.

My husband served two tours on an aircraft carrier in Vietnam and also spent time in the Phillipines, Thailand, Taiwan, etc. He had none of the other things related to CC, so I am thinking it was the liver flukes. I have a claim in but have been denied so far and am still trying to get a connection of service relationship. As Lainy said, there are a lot of Vets of Vietnam and Korea who in later years have been diagnosised with CC. :(

I must put my “two-cents” in. I had always been in very good health, only going to the doctor once a year for a check up and to renew my prescription for Lipitor and Evista. The Lipitor is my guess, but who knows!!!

In the last 5 years I have visited China, Japan, and Vietnam. Did not eat fish. Have had cc since 10/08.

Thanks for this – I guess I should have looked first! There’s also a lot of research going on in Thailand, given the hotspot of Northern Thailand as a global CC centre. There’s links from the reference I posted.
    Thanks again,
    Andy

Dear Andy, we have discussed Liver Flukes here often and you can see the past posts by typing in Liver Flukes in to our search engine. It is usually much longer than 5 years or so. Korean War Vets, Viet Nam Vets, quite a few got CC. The Parasite gets into the Bile Ducts, lives there for about 25 – 30 years and then leave and leave behind Liver Flukes. Nothing has tied it together yet but some have filed suits with the V.A. The only research I have heard of is going on in Taiwan.

There is a question bugging me since I was first diagnosed with CC – where did it come from?

Then I found that liver flukes can cause CC in some parts of the world – see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cholangiocarcinoma for a general review, or http://www.plosmedicine.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pmed.0040201;jsessionid=35B30DE92047FA129ED202BF0B2759DA for more details.

So if one possible cause is getting a fluke infection from eating raw fish in south-east Asia, how many CC patients have been there in the last 3-5 years, and eaten fish?

I visited Thailand in 2005, and ate fish (not knowingly raw, but fish all the same). So for me the ulcer I got in 2007 and the CC in 2009 could have come from a fluke infection…

    Anyone else the same?

    Andy
