Isselure….try swabbing her mouth. Her lips can be moistened with a wash rag even while your mother in-law is sleeping. Although, pain medication presents a trade off the important thing is that she is pain free.

Dear Isselure, This is vrey hard, but know that there are a lot of people here to help and listen! My husband never got used to the pain meds and never really was coherent the last days. Really only spoke because his mouth was so dry and he wanted liquid. My thoughts and prayers are with you all!

Thank you all. Seems like everyday is a new day, of sorts. MIL is sleeping about 20 out of 24 hours a day. Morphine and methadone are knocking her out, but without it she has pain. Is there anything that would work as well where she could be somewhat alert? Nausea is under control. She seems to be just fading away from us and we dont know if the meds are making her just sleep her life away or if its the cc. Please keep praying for her and the kids. Each of them are there every day taking care of her and I am so thankful they can be by her side. Does anyone know if the induced sleep from the meds is a long term thing….or will she ever get use to the amount of pain med and be awake some more but not in pain? The only complaint she has right now is cotton mouth…any suggestions? We got the spray hospice suggested but again she’s asleep most of the time.

Dear Isselure, this is the hardest part now, nothing can compare, but the most important thing is that her meds for pain are working very well so that she has comfort and peace. How wonderful that she completed a wish list! A lot of people never have one let alone complete it. As to what to look for now? I believe you will not see much difference than what is happening, sleep and not eating therefore getting more weak. But that hopefully will be about what you will see. Hospice has a great phamplet on what to expect and perhaps you can even find it on the internet. Best wishes to you MIL and the family.

Update on my MIL. The last few weeks have not been good. Finally increased the dose of med for pain and it seems to be keeping it at bay. I couldn’t believe how much it was increased but she needs it. The nausea is still come and go, but she just hasn’t had a good day in a long while it seems. She sleeps most of the day and night and is so dizzy from all the meds someone has to be there all the time. It is so sad to see her like this. It was just this time last year we saw her across the country marking off the final item on her “wish” list of things she wanted to do in her life. I know many of you on here have seen your loved ones head down this path. My husband doesnt know what to expect next. Hospice is now coming in every other day. Please just keep looking over us and thank you all for your kind words!

    Hi Isselure –

My husband also had nausea and vomiting. Once hospice came in, they were able to manage the nausea and vomiting and his discomfort calmed down. Hospice did a great job of managing the nausea, vomiting, and pain. I hope you have the same experience.

    Blessings,
    Susan

Hi Isselure. I can only say that in Teddy’s case the nausea was from some of his Meds and the CC. I looked at it this way: Here is a foreign substance invading the body and doing destruction causing the whole system to go upside down. Therefore I assumed it was from that and as I said some of the Meds. Teddy took compozine and it worked beautifully.

This is a big question and only a physician would be able to answer it in its entirety. My husband suffered from gastroparesis which was caused by the spread of the cancer in his abdominal area. He had been on TPN and had no intake of solids however; the incessant nausea was caused by accumulated secretion in his stomach. This is something we could not prevent from happening.
Please, stay diligent with the use of medications.

Hospice is now visiting my MIL 3 times a week. Pain is much more in the last two weeks and naseau all the time. Doctors have changed all the med’s trying to help her and suggested hospice to come in and make sure she’s doing ok. What is it with CC that causes all this naseau?
