Greetings Lainy,
Sorry things went downhill at Park Regency. My mom has been at Sunrise for a little over 2 years now and we think all in all they do a good job. We considered a move to a care home when we were faced with having to move to the
February 9, 2010 at 5:28 pm #35411lainySpectatorHi BZ. How are you doing? We discovered that the Park Regency was sending my mom down hill so we just moved her this week to a Private Home Care facility off Cooper & Ray near my daughter. What a blessing!!! In a few days she went off Pampers and has been eating like she hadn’t eaten in months. Of course the dementia is worse but at least we know she is being treated like a human should. She was falling so much that she spent more time at ER than in bed! Forget how I told you the Park Regency was good! NOT!
February 9, 2010 at 4:50 pm #35410BazelSpectatorIndeed Lisa, thanks for sharing. My dad spent a year in Vietnam and when I reported his death to the VA they asked about filing for benefits but when they checked they told me cc wasn’t on the “list” – will now revisit this. My mom is in assisted living as she has Primary Progressive Aphasia and Frontal Temporal Dementia. Any additional funds to offset her care would be a blessing.

February 8, 2010 at 11:52 pm #35409marionsModeratorThanks for handing the brochures to Sheila, Joyce. Yes, Sheila is a wonderful person and is providing much needed help to many. Keep fighting Darla.
Best wishes,
MarionFebruary 8, 2010 at 6:20 pm #35408darlaSpectatorYes, I have gotten several emails from Sheila and also a whole lot of information, unfortunately, so far it hasn’t helped, but she is a wonderful person and willing to talk to and help anyone when she can. Thanks for giving her the brochures Joyce. We need all the advocates we can get. We do need to keep getting the word out about this rare cancer.

February 8, 2010 at 11:40 am #35407jcleggMemberMarion,
Is that wonderful lady Sheila Harrison – from Elmira? She is the person I first “hooked up”with myself – Darla knows her also – she collects the data on winning cases submitted & helps other people around the country. She lives about a 1/2 hour from me and we had lunch one day – she is the nicest lady, and she travels around the country – talking about this subject – I gave her a stack of the brochures we had made.Joyce C.
February 7, 2010 at 11:31 pm #35406darlaSpectatorThanks for posting this Lisa.
It is true that some have gotten approved, like Joyce, but in most cases there are other circumstances involved, like in Butch’s case. Unfortunately, a lot of cases are still being denied. Mine was denied as Jim served on an aircraft carrier (3 miles out) and I have no proof that he was on land, although he was. It’s called “boot’s on ground” and it is being used to deny a lot of claims for both parasites & agent orange. I am going to appeal and keep trying as I hope others will too. I figure that even if I’m not successful I will keep trying, so that atleast the claims are being made and eventually it will hopefully help others with claims in the future. Right now they keep saying there is not enough evidence, which we all know there is. So many vets are now in the age group that are dying from this disease with no apparent explanation except for the parasites.
Lainy, I have heard mention of Korea occassionally as far as the liver flukes are concerned, along with most of the Asian countries. It might be worth checking into.
If anything comes of my case or I learn any more that I feel is relevant. I will post it.
Marion, I looking forward to hearing what information you learn from the lady you mentioned.

February 7, 2010 at 10:50 pm #35405marionsModeratorKris and Lisa…I agree with your comments and your suggestions are well received. Presently, I am in touch with a wonderful Lady who, I am hoping will join us on the discussion board. She works exclusively with claims and other important information benefitting our Vets and their families. I will keep you posted on the further developments.
Best wishes to both of you,
MarionFebruary 7, 2010 at 10:37 pm #35404lisaSpectatorI hoped that this story would help somebody. This is such a rare disease, and I remember being surprised a while ago about the number of Vietnam vets who had come down with it. These men served our country with honor, and their widows are entitled to any benefits that come from that service that may have contributed to their death.
February 6, 2010 at 4:53 pm #35403devoncatSpectatorPerhaps this is so important that there could be a banner across the site like there was when the gemzar/cisplatin study was released.
It also might be something to write about for the next newsletter. There are several members that fall into this category that no longer visit because their spouse has died. By including this info in the newsletter, it might get to them through their email accounts.

February 6, 2010 at 12:35 pm #35402jcleggMemberYes – if there is any question, Vietnam Veterans or their families should file papers to ask for a ruling. I receive “DIC” (survivor benefits) for Butch from VA. Butch was shipped to Vietnam with ULCERATIVE COLITUS, Iif you can imagine they did that!) and served there 17 months. He became VERY sick – almost died there, and received a medical discharge. Because his consquent diagnosis’s of PSC and cholangicarcinoma both stemmed from that original diagnosis , the the liver flukes “thing”, they approved my claim. I think his was a pretty clear cut case – but – other people should try – VA has approved a number of these cases over the last year that are NOT so clear cut.
I don’t know about Korea, Lainy – it would be worth inquiring into, I would think.

MarionFebruary 6, 2010 at 12:44 am #35400lainySpectatorVery interesting, Lisa. Again I wonder if it also pertains to Korea as Teddy was there. Hope you are doing good.

This might help other widows of vets. Her husband served in Vietnam, where he picked up liver flukes that contributed to his cholangiocarcinoma.
Nice to see the VA step up!
