This is great news if it works and pharma companies can be forced to publish the results of current and past trials. Time will tell; if it can be done of course but I guess if it was going to happen then perhaps it could work in Europe if the EU were to legislate for this? Just a thought, but I am guessing that if anyone was going to legislate for something like this then it would be the EU before the USA would. We all know how much the EU like to put things in law!

    Thanks for this Marion.

Great idea, but how enforce it, especial;y for old studies? And, I really hate to say this, how do you force someone, like a big pharma who has paid for an entire study, to release information? Folks, this is business, and business has secrets – proprietary, classified, call it what you will. The government does it and uses taxpayer dollars to pay for it.

Way to heavy for this early.

For the first time ever, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has taken a position on clinical trial results reporting, and it’s a very strong position! The WHO now says that researchers have a clear ethical duty to publicly report the results of all clinical trials. Significantly, the WHO has stressed the need to make results from previously hidden trials available. Ben Goldacre said, “This is a very positive, clear statement from WHO, and it is very welcome.” Ilaria Passarani from the European Consumer Organisation BEUC called it “a landmark move for consumers.” It is the position we and hundreds of you wrote to the WHO last autumn urging them to adopt. Well done everyone!
