Hi Bill, I read the Foley blog and it was quite depressing to me. Doesn’t appear that they did anything at Mayo for her. I am from Burnsville MN and have thought of a 2nd opinion for my mom, but she seems to have such faith in her oncologist’s diagnosis. She is from northern MN and is seeing an oncologist in Duluth. I see her very tired from what is going on and find it hard to think of taking her to Rochester for a 2nd opinion. She will be 83 in April if she is still with us. Thanks for the wish of luck and the suggestion though. Candee
candeeSpectatorHi Jamie, My prayer’s are with your mom and family. My mother also spent 6 days in the hospital from a blood infection that her doctor thinks evolved from the bile duct stent placement back in early December. She had terrible chills and a fever here and there and ended up hospitalized and the blood cultures were positive for Klebsiella bacteria. She is over that now and will be starting back on the Gemzar chemo on Wednesday this week, as her oncologist indicates that it can give her some quality months ahead. She went through a first treatment of chem with Gemzar on Dec. 27th and did just fine on it, a slight thrush infection in her mouth only. Then she got very sick from the bacterial blood infection and was hospitalized. We didn’t think it was the chemo that made her sick because she was just fine for 5 days afterwards. I am anxious for her to have that next chemo treatment, as I want to have her with us for as long as possible. I don’t think we’ll be taking my mom for a 2nd opinion anywhere, as the cancer has spread into the liver and the oncologist gave her only 2 options, Gemzar or hospice at this point. Keep your faith. Candee from Burnsville
candeeSpectatorTiffany, Thanks much for your input on the hospice. It was comforting. How is everything going?
candeeSpectatorMy Mom has a plastic stent in, which I understand is temporary, maybe 2-3 months before needing replacement. Odd thing is, she has just spent her 5th day in the hospital with a Klebsiella bacterial blood infection. Her oncologist says the stent may be the source of the infection. She had it placed via endoscope as mentioned by Senior Member ‘the cdr’ about 1 month ago. Severe chills were the symptom of the blood infection. She is getting better with IV Cefapim antibiotics. Hopefully will get better enough to continue on with the chemo. Hoping for more months to spend with her. Candee
candeeSpectatorTiffany, My prayers are with your Dad and your family. We also thought that Mom’s gall bladder was giving her stomach problems and that it was a gall stone that blocked her bile duct and caused the jaundice. Life seems so unfair at times. Mom had her 1st chemo on Thursday last week and has had some ill effects. Spent a better part of last night in the ER and has had some mini seizure type occurances. Her next chemo was scheduled for today, but they will not administer it with the symptoms she’s having. That was our only hope of her life going on for several more months. This is so hard to take. Does hospice seem like a nice option? Are the caregivers very compassionate and caring? Your Dad deserves the ultimate care now.
It is comforting to know I am not alone in this dreadful state of mind. Peace, CandeecandeeSpectatorHi, My name is Candee and was recently informed of my Mother’s CC at Christmas time. My Father and she indicated she had liver cancer and had 2 years to live yet. Her oncologist has painted a much grimmer picture. First the CC diagnosis and then 3 months without chemo, 6-9 months with the chemo (Gemzar) if she tolerates it well enough. Finding it all hard to digest.
