HI,
Thanks for all your responses. Dad had his first treatment on Wednesday. I think he found it quite anticlimatic-he was expecting a general anaesthetic and some kind of ray gun application(?). He was so pumped that it was so easy!! He has not felt poorly at all-played golf on Thursday as usual, hasn’t missed a meal and is playing bridge tomorrow. He was prescribed Ondansetron and Dexamethasone for nausea, and has experienced none thus far. The staff at the hospital had us well prepared for any eventuality, but I am happy to report no problems. I realize this may change over time, but so far so good. His spirits are great and we are behind him 100%. Mom did go to her family doc to get some sleep aid, as she was having trouble and it was making her feel sick and unable to cope. That really seems to have helped her out. I almost passed out in the chemotherapy suite, but my humiliation greatly amused everyone there. They are planning to get me a bed for next time…
Kris, it’s nice to hear my dad is not the big tumour prize winner-I hope the treatment works for you (and Dad)!!!
Cody, take heart-apparently there is lots of room for these tumours if Dad and Kris are any indication. Christmas, New Year’s, Valentines Day-keep going!!
desperateleeSpectatorThank you all for your replies. They are proposing gemzar (gemcitobine) and cisplatin in combination for Dad. I will try and get more information about his staging, and also why surgery has been completely ruled out. Thank you again for your help and caring.
LeedesperateleeSpectatorHello,
I am already comforted by not feeling quite as alone with this. My father, 81, was just diagnosed with CC. I did not have enough info to ask all the right questions at our initial consultation with the Oncologists, but I am taking the day today to arm myself. The cancer was discovered incidentally on a pelvic mri for unrelated bladder polyps. That said, my father is still asymptomatic and in good health. They have indicated that the cancer is inoperable, with a number (unclear?) of metastases to the liver and a probable to the lung. They are perfroming a CT scan to clarify, which is slightly delayed due to minor bladder surgery scheduled for Dad next Tuesday. They are already talking about the combination chemo of gemcitobine and cisplatin for Dad, but I have concerns about the effects on him given his age and the fact that he still feels great right now. It is very difficult to look at him and believe anything this horrible can be happening. We are a small family, and very close. We just lost my uncle in July to cancer, and can’t believe this is happening again. I can’t seem to find much hopeful information in the literature, and would just like to hear some input from people going through, or not going through the chemo. I really don’t know what to expect as this progresses, and as my mom is almost 80, a lot of the care and decision making responsiblity is going to be mine. If anyone can help I would be most grateful. -
