As we all knew it was coming, moms-in-law passed away late Saturday evening. Her blood pressure had been down and pulse became very rapid for most of the day. Her breathing had been labored for over 12 hours. We were all by her bedside, just sitting with her and she made one sudden gasp/gurgle and took about 5 more breaths and was gone. It is so hard to lose someone so young (she was about an hour and 15 minutes away from her 47th birthday) but knowing she is at peace now, not dealing with the terrible pain she had been in for the last few weeks, gives us comfort. This cancer is the worst thing we have ever dealt with, she was preliminary diagnosed with it exactly one month ago today.

Hi folks, thought I would give a quick update. We are now under Hospice care and moms-in-law has moved in with us. My wife is taking care of her full time. We don’t know if it is just her expressing herself, or if it truly is the pain, but she is moaning and groaning out loud quite a bit. She does this when she is awake. For pain control, they have her on two duragesic patches, oral morphine, and lorazapam and ativan for sleep. We have seen a great decline in the last few days, she has stopped eating for the most part (a few sips of Ensure was all we could get in her today) and she has been asking for ice water occasionally. We have stopped trying to get her to the bathroom and are using a bedside commode as it was taking too much of her energy. Her legs from the knees down are extremely swollen and are weeping. If she continues the decline have been on for the last few days, I don’t expect her to be with us for another week at the most. We are trying to have as much time as we can with her while we can. My wife is of course taking it very hard (she is only 26, I’m 28) as is her 21 yr old sister and 19 yr old brother.

I hope everyone is having a good Thanksgiving, this one has been especially hard on us.

    Take care,
    Greg

Hi Folks- We had our consult w/ Dr Sanoff, and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done at this point. They did place a stent on Friday and that helped with her confusion and the jaundice, but Dr Vorheess and his team feel the best course of action at this point is to work with pallative care doctors to try to make her as comfortable as possible. From what I understand the cancer has spread to outside her liver and is quote “everywhere”. My wife and I have been with her since Wednesday, coming home only Friday night and last night and are about to make the 2.5 hr drive again in a few minutes. They are hoping to move her back to our area tomorrow and hopefully into a new hospice house that just opened this summer. All the Dr’s agree that she probably only has “weeks” left. Sorry to make this so quick, but I need to get out the door & on the road, Take care- Greg.

Thanks Carol, we are just west of Charlotte- before you get to Gastonia. I think we are seeing Dr Sandoff on Wednesday. Thanks again for the info.
