MemberMary Beth,
Lainy is right….things can turn around…and that is what we’re going to hope and pray for in Rob’s case. It sounds like the chemo has had a quick response. But I will also pay for you, for strength and courage. I’m so glad you have a sister who is there to help you…so you can concentrate your energies on what you need to do.
Sending hugs and prayers for all your family…Julie t.

MemberTom….yes, that is the good news….that there are a lot of posts over a long time. I have to laugh…..we are similar in regard to the posting of LONG posts. I just seem to have a problem condensing things. Why use 3 words when you can use 30? Right? I figure the more I explain, the less questions there are.

MemberTom…yes indeed, I had read an old post of yours about poo…had been reading through a lot of old posts you had, got off track and didn’t pay attention to what I was doing. Glad it did let you laugh a little.
Wrapping my arms around you and Ben both…..with a prayer.

MemberI can’t reference where I read it, but I know I did read somewhere at the start of my researching information, that in very rare diseases, studies sometimes ended before they were planned to end, due to not having enough participants for the study…the problem of a rare disease. There aren’t enough people with the disease at any one point in the disease process required for a particular study. However, IMO, I would think that if any of those studies showed any great promise, there would be even the few patients available clamoring to get into the study.

MemberTom, “Praying for poop,” reminds me of the time when my dad had cancer and his kidneys were failing We were “praying for pee.” So glad to hear that Ben is home. Hang in there.

MemberNicole, I would not hesitate to call the oncologist to get their input. If the oncologist says it’s okay to wait until your husband’s next appointment, then you should be okay…especially if the symptoms haven’t returned. I also wouldn’t hesitate to go to the ER immediately, if there was a hint that the symptoms are returning.

MemberTom, I’m with Lainy…..would like to swear too Sometimes the uncertainty of this cancer is worse than the treatments for the cancer. If I could, I would wrap my arms around both of you and give you all the strength I have right now, if it would help. My heart and prayers are with you and Ben right now……..for hope and healing.

MemberJean-Marie, It seems to me that besides being lucky….the way to get maintain or even get ahead of CC is to be persistent, to not be afraid to dump what you’re doing and go on to something else, and to not be afraid to seek out different doctors and opinions…and to read, read, read…looking for whatever it out there, treatments that often aren’t well known. You are doing that and I applaud you for taking the bull by the horns. I wish the scan news had been better, but if that trial wasn’t meant to work it is time to move on anyway. I don’t have a lot to add regarding treatment beyond Gem/Cis, but I wanted you to know that……You’re doing a fantastic job as a caretaker. Hugs!

MemberMarion,
Thank for for that info. I’ve seen these terms bandied about, but other than thinking about them in the most general terms…I did not know what they meant…esp partial response and stable disease.

MemberTom, Your tag line says, “Don’t give up,” and I know that you won’t. At least they have found the infections and have something with which to treat them. I’m glad they put Ben in ICU, even as a precaution. Good move on contacting the GI oncologist at MD Anderson.
I’m so glad to hear that you were able to take part in at least some of the festivities of the wedding . As much as you were concerned about Ben, it’s important that you find some time for yourself as well. It isn’t being selfish.
I will say a prayer that Ben’s doctors gain some clarity in what is going on with him….why the bile is backing up and why the infections.
Hugs from Iowa….Julie T.

MemberTom….I’m very proud of you for making the decision. It was yours to make…but I know it was difficult. As the “patient” in my relationship with my husband, my “caretaker”, I have been encouraging him to go off for his bike rides or other activities….when I was sitting in my recliner , out of it from the latest chemo. I knew that I just had to sleep it off….and him being here wasn’t going to change anything. He needed some time to himself…..or with his friends with whom he goes to lunch a couple days a week. In short, he needed breaks from ME….from the intensity of the situation and he has always come back looking a little more refreshed.
I don’t know when your flight went over eastern Iowa…..but I am giving a little wave.
I have relatives up by Emmetsburg, so am familiar with the area to some extent. Enjoy your family and visit…..and the wedding…..without guilt. Go with love in your heart…..and know that by going, you will return to Ben, clearer headed and refreshed. It will be good for both of you.
