Thank-you Jim. My Dad’s surgery is now scheduled for May 10th. The stress is enormous.

Congratulations! I am so encouraged to hear of your clean bill of health!

How have you find the recovery after your surgery?

My Dad is currently waiting for surgery and his surgeon is quite optimistic they will be able to operate and achieve negative margins. He’s currently got two bile drains in, in order to reduce his bilirubin levels back to a normal range. Surgery looks to be about two weeks away, they are taking approx. 70 – 80% of his liver, the full left lobe and part of the right.

    Can you offer any advice?

Thank-you for your replies! It is a great comfort to connect with each of you.

I have learned that my Dad’s surgeon finished his surgical residency 3 years ago and is now the liver specialist at Trillium. Dr. Garzon has performed 30 CC surgeries a year for two years. He studied under a surgical oncologist in Toronto who specializes in biliary cancers. I’ve actually contacted that surgeon, Dr. Hanna and we may be seeing him for a second opinion for the surgery itself.

Could you offer me your opinions on the extent of Dr. Garzon’s experience? The cancer is so rare that I wouldn’t expect a surgeon to be performing this surgery several times a week but just the same do you think his surgical experience sounds like it is enough?

Thank you Marion! I have just sent an e-mail to Dr. Cleary. My Dad is a candidate for surgery and from what I understand the skill of the surgeon is imperative – the surgeon he is currently seeing may have performed this surgery lots of times but we actually don’t know yet if that’s the case, there are still so many questions we’re waiting to have answered. Your prompt reply has really helped, thank you!
