Thanks so much for your feedback. Right now my mom couldn’t handle chemo/radiation because she’s still recovering and weak but she’s improving a lot. She definitely needs to gain some weight. She’s also on blood thinners for a clot and will likely be on them for months. She’s 66 and besides the post-op complications she’s in very good health. I think shortly down the road she might be in a good position for treatment if that decision is made. Her oncologist said if chemo is suggested, she would suggest only using Gemcitabine and not doing any radiation.

Thanks again for your feedback KrisV.

Thank you for the information. I really appreciate it. I agree that the interventional radiology procedure to move the bile drain introduced bacteria into the bloodstream as things quickly changed at that point. I hope this is a rare situation and few others ever go through such an experience. I will definitely be educating my parents about the Bilary Emergency Card and perhaps look into an informational bracelet for my mom to wear.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Thanks for the comments. Is the septic shock more common right after surgery or can this happen going forward at any time after bilary surgery? I see how important it is to carry the bilary emergency card suggested by the CC Foundation. I’m so fearful now of my mom not being close to a cancer center/sophisticated enough hospital that is equipped to treat this in such an emergency situation as the one she was in. Thankfully she’s doing well and has received excellent care but I’m so afraid of potential complications that go undetected.

Hi Fred. I will let you know what the oncologist tells us. I’d love to hear what you’re told as well. I hope you hear great news on Monday. I also hope you sons recovery is going well!

Thank you Pat. The tests didn’t take long. My parents live close to Manhattan so that made things easier. Once the MRI was ordered by the liver specialist, the ERCP followed a few days later and then we went for the first surgical consult 2 days later. The second surgeon we met (who is at Sloan Kettering) wanted a CT angiogram to be done and it happened that afternoon. Surgery was scheduled the next day following the results of the CT. There was one additional test prior to surgery – another ultrasound performed directly by the radiologist.

It’s great news that the recent resection patients have promising outcomes. I hope you are doing well too.

Hi everyone. Thanks for all of the support. I really appreciate it. I wanted to give an update. My mom’s resection took place on Saturday. The surgery went well without any surprises. The tumor seems to have been fully removed. It was pushing on the portal vein and a portion of the vein was cut. The surgeon mentioned that one of the nearby lymph nodes may have cancer involvement but we won’t know for sure until pathology comes back. This of course worries us. For now, we’re focusing on recovery from the surgery.

Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks again :)

I know this is an older discussion, but I am wondering the same about CC being hereditary. My mother, 65, was just diagnosed with CC. We have a lot of cancer in my mothers side of the family. My mothers mom is a breast cancer survivor and is 93. My mothers father had multiple myelomia for many years. My brother had melanoma a few years back on his foot. He’s now 38. My mother’s sister had endometrial cancer at 61. Several of my moms first cousins had breast cancer. My mom’s aunts also had cancer. And there are second cousins also with cancer. Many of these cancers have been diagnosed in the past 5 years. I know so many other families who also have various forms of cancer. It’s just so scary.

I’m quite interested in finding out what kinds of testing/screening can be done as well as the lifestyle changes we can make to reduce the risks.
