Never forget Carnation Instant Breakfast as a supplement. It has all the good stuff at half the cost of Ensure……

Dear Ichase – My son was diagnosed at age 29, so I know how incredibly overwhelming this is to you as a Mom. I have been reading this site for quite a while now. I think if I could do one thing over it would be to insist on seeing Dr. Kato at NY Presbyterian. Even when given no options, this doctor seems to have some answers. I read nothing but positive things about him and, sadly, now wish we had put him on our list of doctors to see. You’re in my thoughts – Nancy

Dear Isellure – I believe the doctor may be referring to the portal vein which is the main vein through which blood flows through the liver (at least, that is my understanding)…..I admire you all for honoring your MIL’s wishes. I’m sure it is very hard for all of you. – Nancy

Kris – One other thing I wanted to mention. I have a good friend being treated in NY for leukemia. There is a wondeful facility in NYC called The Hope Lodge where cancer patients can stay — for free — if they are being treated and have difficulty with transportation or need to stay nearby a hospital. Check into their website — it may be something that may come in handy if you need to stay nearby Sloan. – Nancy

MCF – Welcome to our CC Family, even though we are sorry you had to join us. Your best bet for a lot of your questions is to search this website under the “Search Forum” button above. There are many threads regarding chemo, radiation, etc. Also, fight with your insurance company to get approval of procedures. They seem to always so “no” at first, but you can press it and sometimes win approval. My son had to fight to get them to pay for his chemo-embolization procedures but, in the end, they paid. I really have no respect for insurance companies and what they put people through! Sometimes, the doctors have to step in for you and fight with the insurance company as well. My son’s surgeon was willing to do that for him and he was very successful. Good luck with everything and keep us posted. As I said, there are many threads for you to read regarding your questions. Best wishes – Nancy

jrr1610 – I think Dr. Kato is a wonderful choice from what I have read about him. The pain can definitely be caused by blockage of the bile duct. A stent to free the bile should probably be considered, but I am sure Dr. Kato will discuss all that with you. Unfortunately, some pain seems to be associated with this disease even with a stent in place. I am uncertain about your question regarding chemo but, again, I am sure Dr. Kato will have the correct answers for your questions. There are a lot of threads on this website that may be helpful if you try searching on them. You probably can find a lot of answers that way. Hope this helps and good wishes to you and your family – Nancy

Connie — I think that may be an impossible question to answer. I’m not sure anyone has accurate data. The doctors are always saying it is best to start early, but as you will see quite often on this website, 2nd and 3rd opinions are highly recommended as well. Sorry I can’t give you a straight-forward answer — I don’t believe there is one…..Nancy

Kim – I volunteer for a very selfish reason….I get back WAY more than I give. This website gave my son so much hope and was such a huge support for him, that I plan to give as much as I can here as well. Thank you for your well wishes…..I will enjoy! – N

Sitaram – No one here has the answer to life span with or without treatment. This disease is different with each individual. I have heard good things about theraspheres. Where is your father being treated?
