I’ll be thinking about you from Canada, and I’m looking forward to reading your posts about the surgery!

I just spoke with my dad. He said they would insert a tube and the fluid can be drained into a bag whenever it is needed.

I’m not sure exactly. I have to talk to my dad about what exactly my mom’s doctor said. I was under the impression that it would be a procedure that can be carried out at home, with a nurse visiting her to empty the bag. I can’t seem to find any info on it because I don’t know the name of the procedure. Thanks so much for the replies.

Hi there, I can’t answer all of your questions. I can answer the one about the blood count though. My mom also has a low white blood cell count. Her doctor told us that the chemo kills the cancer cells, but it also attacks healthy cells, and as a result her white blood cell count is affected (this is because WBC and rapid growing cells)

Also about the appetite, my mom doesn’t have an appetite, and we are always trying to force her to eat something. She has already lost alot of weight because of this. If he is drinking boost then that’s great, my mom was drinking ensure, but she is so sick of it, she can’t drink it anymore.

Good luck, I wish you all the best

No my mom is not experiencing any itching. She has had this scab since about 2 weeks before she was diagnosed with CC which was in Dec/09. Her doctor didn’t suggest any cream or anything for it, she just said that it was related to the disease and left it at that. I saw the scab yesterday and it has replaced her entire bellybutton. Hopefully someone will know a bit about this. Thanks for your responses.

Hi there, I am sorry to hear about your mom, my mom was diagnosed in December/2009 She is stage IV so surgery is not an option. She is on chemo though she is on gemcitabine and cisplatin. We are not from Alberta but we are in Toronto Ontario. I would seek a second opinion if you can.

It is recommended to use topical flouride in trays at home during chemo treatments. Ask your dentist for a prescription. I’m a RDH and I have seen this many times.

Hi there, I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. My mom was diagnosed with CC 2 days before Christmas, (surgery is not an option for her) she is also only 56 and I am 29. I know exactly what you are going through.

Try to stay positive, and good luck tomorrow, let us know how it went.

My mom’s oncologist is also Dr. Knox, I’m not sure about Dr. Horgan though, but it sounds familiar, so maybe. I will tell her about the ginger gravel. Where do you get that? I’ve never heard of that before. Thank you.

She didn’t ask for another nauseant drug. She is back on gravel. It seems to do the job but it just makes her sleep the day away. She said she will talk to her doc about it on Tuesday when she goes in for another round of chemo. Right now nothing is working for the nausea (or maybe she just hasn’t tried the “right” drug for her) The nurses told her that nausea would be normal after the chemo (she just had chemo on Tues). Right now my biggest concern is the ascetis. I’m getting worried because I don’t see any improvement. I’m also really worried because she is hardly eating. I sure hope things get better soon.

Thank you so much for your help!

My mom just informed me that at her last doc appt they said that it would be better not to drain it at this time because she is active with chemo, and it could cause an infection, and she is on blood thinners at the moment because of a blood clot in her spleen. They will assess the situation again in 2 weeks.

Lainy- she hates needles and is tired of all her doc appointments but I will inform her that the procedure is not that bad. It is also discouraging to know that she will have to have it done on a weekly basis. She had some of the fluid extracted for analysis before her diagnosis and she said it was very painful. She even said that it was worse then childbirth!

Raye – thanks so much! Any info that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. She is currently on chemo with Gemcitabine and Cistlapin, but she is not a candidate for surgery because she is stage IV.

Thanks so much for all the support and advice!

Mom’s not feeling well at all. The doctor prescribed another drug for her nausea but she switched back to gravel because the other one “knocks” her out. She is very tired and not eating much. Sometimes she goes a couple of days in a row without eating anything. Now we think the ascetis is the cause. The doc said they could drain it but mom doesn’t want to because of the needles and it’s just going to come back anyway. She just completed her 2nd round of chemo and I am getting nervous because the ascites is not not getting better. My family doc told me that you’ll know if the chemo is working if the ascites gets better. She is weak and I am nervous. What an aweful disease this is. She was diagnosed on December 21st, and she doesn’t seem to be getting better at all. Thanks for your concern. You are all great!
