Patricia Maxin of Houston recognized for Service to the Rare Cancer Community
Recognizing her exceptional efforts towards positively impacting her community, Patricia “Patty” Maxin of Houston has been honored with the prestigious Daily Point of Light Award from Points of Light. Points of Light, a nonpartisan, global nonprofit organization, inspires, equips, and mobilizes millions of people to take action and create change.
Patricia’s recognition is primarily for her work with the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer originating in the bile ducts – the long, slender tubes carrying bile from the liver to the small intestine. The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness, supporting patients and their caregivers, and funding research to improve the understanding and treatment of the disease.
Following her husband’s death from cholangiocarcinoma in 2015, she discovered and began volunteering with CCF as a member of the Board of Directors, as a research advocate, and a mentor, and assisted the Foundation with their annual conference and fundraising.
Patty founded the CholangioConnect program, a mentor program that pairs cholangiocarcinoma patients and caregivers with mentors who have faced similar situations. She managed it all voluntarily while typically giving more than 120 hours of service every month. Her work has facilitated more than 1,100 patient and caregiver mentor connections.
“Patty is passionate about the CCF community and extends her warmth and kindness to all those who are walking the difficult path of facing a cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis,” said CCF Founder and CEO Stacie Lindsey. “Her exceptional insight, creativity, and generosity have made the CholangioConnect program what it is today.”
Patty has also received the Presidential Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award for her dedication and continues to serve on the CCF Board of Directors.
Points of Light, known for their dedication to civic engagement, recognizes that ordinary individuals can create extraordinary change. They believe that everyone has the power to take action and make a real difference, and the Daily Point of Light Award celebrates those who exemplify this belief. Patty Maxin’s selfless actions and dedication to improving her community embody the values championed by Points of Light.
