Any experience with medicare?????

Sorry, Kris. I was worried when I read your post yesterday that your Dr. was not right. I have been through this quite extensively the last 18 months and feel pretty knowledgeable. You can not get SSDI unless you have neen paying into the fund the last 3 out of 5 years I believe. I know my husband didn’t qualify because all of his “off farm” income was from teaching and he paid into the teachers retirement fund and not Soc. Security.Anyway even if you get it that does not qualify you for health care benefits(Medicare) for two years after you have been officially labeled disabled. We considered the divorce option at one point but thankfully things worked out so we didn’t have to go to those extremes! It’s very sad what you have to do to receive help. I hate to get “political” but things really need to change! My sister-in-law is battling recurrent colon cancer and they are faced with outspending their maximum life time benefit on their insurance.I just got done telling my brother the steps he needs to take to try and get my sister-in-law on disability and hopefully on Medicare in two years.I hope things work out for you. Just push your Drs. in Sweden as hard as you can- maybe you can contact someone who is politically involved to make your case for you. Here we usually contact our congressmen but there should be someone there to advocate for you! Take care and best wishes and prayers. Mary

I swear in the last two days hope and dispair have been swinging back and forth too quickly for me and my family to process. My mom is taking it the hardest. I will press on with Sweden and fight tooth and nail for post op treatments (if I can even have surgery).Dog gone it Kris, I’m sure Dr. Sanoff was unaware you had been going to college. The only thing I can think of is applying for SSDI due to you being unable to work due to surgery ,the cancer itself, side effects from pain medications, mental depression then you would get medical coverage. It is sad, but my aunt and uncle actually got a divorce because of a similar situation. Financially it is not fair. Some hospitals will provide treatment base on income/debt ratio and or work out a agreement for payments. I don’t know if this is of any help. Knowing social security they probally have a min years of work as well. Lets all put our heads together and figure something out. Press on with Sweden. I know their are other ways to get chemo meds if needed straight from the companies, but don’t know their criteria. Wiil keep searching and trying to find away.

I was told that medicare would cover me at the doctors yesterday, but I have just been turned down as I have not worked 5 out of the last ten yeats (It took me 7 years to finish my PhD) so I only have 3, plus my husband makes too much (40,000).Now I am desperate. What does it mean?? Is there a special program for cholangio patients or did the doctor just get it wrong and assumed I had worked enought to qualify for medicare? I was told basically to divorce my husband if I wanted help. Great.
I had such hopes that if the swedish system refused chemo on the grounds of statistcs that I at least could get it here at home. I never want to make that decision about when to come home, not for treatment but to die. I am so tired of this crap.
