    Hi Amr,

Welcome back. Not sure if ‘Movicol’ is available in Eygypt, it is a very gentle laxative that may help your Dad’s symptoms.

”Each sachet of this medicine contains macrogol (polyethlene glycol ‘3350’), which is a type of medicine known as an osmotic laxative. Each sachet also contains sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and potassium chloride. The contents of the sachets are mixed with water to make a drink.Macrogol is an inert substance that passes through the gut without being absorbed into the body. It relieves constipation because it causes the water it is taken with to be retained in the bowel instead of being absorbed into the body. This increases the water content and volume of the stools in the bowel, making them softer and easier to pass”.

Hello, Amr!! Welcome back!! My sister seems to be controlling the constipation with Senna & a softener. I hope you find something which works for your dad – it certainly seems to be an extremely painful symptom.

My sister’s on Gem/Cis, too & seems to be tolerating it pretty well. There have been good results with reductions in her tumour markers. I send my very, very best wishes for good results for your dad.

Amr……You were missed. I had attended a lecture re: nutrition and digestion and this is what I had learned: If problems become severe it was recommended to stand upright while eating. Food digests 10% in the first hour and the remaining 90% takes 4 hours. Also, walking around after eating a low fat diet, higher carb content, and using enzymes for digestion may be helpful. (I probably did not tell you anything you don’t already know being that you are a physician yourself.)
    Best wishes,
    Marion

    Hi Amr,

Great to see you back here again but I am very sorry to hear that your dad is going through a rough time right now. Sorry I can’t help with the chemo, my dad never had that. I am sure that others will be able to help you with their experiences though.

My dad had a lot of the symptoms that your dad has just now, the vomiting, chills and shakes and also the constipation. Like Kris, my dad used Lactulose for that and it helped him quite a bit. He also tried Movicol at first but that wasnt so good. Is your dad taking any meds for the vomiting? My dad got through various types of medication for this and what we were told are that some types work better for one person but not so good for others. So ended up going through various types and combinations.

I hope you can get your dad some help with this and I will keep my fingers crossed for some good results from his chemo.

My best wishes to you and your dad,

    Gavin

Hello Dearest Amr. Sorry to hear your dad has some problems. I have a couple of suggestions. I dont know if your father is taking anti nausea medicines. If so, these can cause some of the constipation. If he is on them, talk to his doctor about changing those medications. You can also try Lactulose. It is a sugar syrup that really helps with constipation. It is quite mild as well, my cat and I both have had to take it.

The fever and chills are sometimes just a part of this as is the vomiting. I noticed that with myself, these symptoms are worse when I am very tired or dehydrated.

    Take care.
