You are all soo nice thank you for the responses. My mom’s bilirubin was 150 today I am hoping and praying for the downward trend to continue. We really need to start chemo ASAP therefore, I am PRAYING that the bilirubin co-operates.

I think that everyone on this site is probably the nicest people I have met…Thank you and God bless everyone!!

    Hi there,

In my dads case, he wasn’t able to have chemo either due to the fact that his bili levels were far too high. We were told by the onc what Katja has said to you, that if the bile can’t be drained then the chemo would not be able to leave the system. Hopefully once your mums stent starts to work as it should then the bili levels will start to drop. Positive thoughts coming your way.

    Best wishes,

    Gavin

I think there is a different system, must be times 10? We were told that a healthy person’s bilirubin can be up to 30. I bet that’s the equivalent of 3 for you devastateddaughter.
Hoping stent works quickly. The liver is such an important organ and if it can’t drain the bile it won’t be able to deal with the poisons of chemo. Good luck to you.

Hi, in the UK it has to be 50. At one point my Dads bilirubin was in the high 400’s. Once the stent starts working it can come down pretty quickly. My Dads once fell nearly 150 in 2 weeks. Don’t be alarmed if it comes down and goes up slightly a few days after the stent goes in. This has happened to my Dad twice and it’s sometimes due to inflammation of the ducts.

    Best wishes

I am definitely not an expert yet, but I do know our oncologist at the Mayo Clinic said they don’t like to do chemotherapy if bilirubin is above 5. He said they could but they usually weaken the dose. But if it’s above 10 they don’t recommend it. I think because at those levels the body is already too weak. The stent should hopefully help drainage, my partners bilirubin went from 21 before his metal stent to 4.4 two weeks later. All the best to you and your mom!

Just wanted to know if anyone knows how it works when your billirubin is high can you still get chemo? My mom’s billirubin was very high and they have put in a stent today…she has an appointment on tuesday for chemo, do you think she’ll be able to go for the chemo? or do you need to wait till the billirubin goes back to normal?

thank you sooo much for you help!!
