Connection to Coeliac & Gluten Intolerance?

I know I’ve come across celiac disease many times in my research for my mother, who had autoimmune hepatitis. Celiac is also an autoimmune disorder, and it seems the autoimmune diseases just love to attack the liver. People with any autoimmune disease should get screened very thoroughly and often, I believe. There is a tremendous surge in the amount of people suffering from immune problems and they seem to wind up with liver and/or kidney problems. Everything seems to indicate that immune problems predispose you to getting cc. Then again, I got my doctorate from surfing the Internet!! — Joyce

P.S. I think I’ll be talking with my doctor about this as I was also DX with degenerative bones about twenty years ago and actually ended up with titanium rodes in my back due to disc deterioation. Work myself backwards for a while. Thanks for mentioning got me off a running doing some more research.Hi Jeff
I was interested to read about your hiatal hernia. After I had received the diagnosis of CC my GP told me I had hiatus hernia, in a “throw away” line. It was as if he knew I had been suffering from it for some time and assumed I obviously knew I had it. I thought I just suffered from indigestion. I have had no treatment or medication for the hernia but still feel I get bouts of acid reflux. Or, could it be the bile not draining properly? Reading your comments has reminded me to raise the subject with my GP.

I do recall coming across some studies that have shown a correlation between celiac disease and some of the GI cancers. Rather than try to summarize from memory (scary!), let me try and track down those studies, and I will post them as soon as possible.

Gillian…. My family has as history of rumathroid(sp) arthritis and I have as well. I also develoved hiatel hernia with acid reflux in my early twenties that caused considerable inflamation and irritation time and time again. I do personally believe any inflamatory/ acidic condition plays an important role in the on set of CC. I do believe my situation would be different today if They the doc’s had repaired my hernia instead of life long antacid medication as needed. Maybe I am gluten intolerant and don’t even know. I know I have inflamed joints; In fact I just saw orthopeadics yesterday to get asteroid injection in too my shoulder joint. Maybe I need to have this gluten intolerance checked out.

Hi,
A family member has recently been diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma – we are still ‘processing’ that and trying to understand why – but we also have gluten intolerance & coeliac (also called celiac) disease in the family, although this person had not been diagnosed with coeliac
This has led me to wonder whether there is a connection between the two (undiagnosed coeliac and cholangiocarcinoma). Coeliac is, in essentials, a hereditary inflammatory syndrome which typically affects the intestines.
Personally, I have an intolerance to gluten, which manifested itself in the form of serious joint inflammation/arthritis
Has anyone seen any research or studies along this line? And do others have a family history of gluten intolerance/coeliac disease?
