    Hi, Gavin,
For severe cough, try to see whether Benzonatate is ok with your mum’GP .
USUALLY IS 200 mg three times daily as needed. It is the medication I will use if the mucolytics or expectorants like Robitussin DM don’t work and before trying to use narcotic to control the cough.
Say hi to your mum for me and go BEARS.
    God bless.

    Hi Percy,

Thanks for that. As to teh Mucodyne, yes that was what we were hoping for. Try and break up the mucus and phlegm and then it is supposed to be easier for it to come up with the coughing etc. She has the liquid Mucodyne before and now they have tried the capsule form. However, the Mucodyne seems to work as intended to a point. But, the coughing is absolutely horrendous as a result of that, not much is coming up and seeing that amount of coughing and the after effects of it, looks like my mum is having a heart attack. Plus with that level of coughing, my mum is fighting just to breathe at the same time and that is not good at all. Face goes bright red, breathing frantically through pursed lips and making sounds that no one should ever make.

I’ve read loads about Mucodyne and read through many personal experiences of it on COPD forums. Some people swear by it, great, helped loads etc, and others hate it, didn’t work and have the same experiences as my mum. So I guess that what you say is right about it’s effectiveness. Mums thinking is that if this is what it does then to hell with that, she’ll put up with the mucas and stuff. Can’t blame her for thinking that. Plus, she is meant to take it 4 times a day, i think not, especially before bedtime!

The water I agree with loads, but trying to get someone who is only 6 stone to drink 6-8 glasses a day is a tough fight for me!! Bloody COPD, a horrible disease!!

Yep day 1 tomorrow, can’t wait! Looking forward to stomping on these Colts hopefully! 25/1 for the Superbowl, always optimistic here!!! Hope your having a good weekend.

    Thanks Percy!

    Hi, Gavin,
Can your mum use this to thin out the mucus? ask the doctor.

    “Expectorants
    Definition
Expectorants are drugs that loosen and clear mucus and phlegm from the respiratory tract.
    Purpose
The drug described here, guaifenesin, is a common ingredient in cough medicines. It is classified as an expectorant, a medicine that helps clear mucus and other secretions from the respiratory tract. However, some debate exists about how effectively guaifenesin does this. In addition, some cough medicines contain other ingredients that may cancel out guaifenesin’s effects. Cough suppressants such as codeine, for example, work against guaifenesin because they discourage coughing up the secretions that the expectorant loosens.
There are other ways to loosen and clear the respiratory secretions associated with colds. These include using a humidifier and drinking six to eight glasses of water a day.”

Say hi to your mum and hope she will be better soon.
BTW, the BEARS are 10 points favorite over the Colts this Sunday.
    God bless.

Thanks for that Percy. For sure I will say hi to my mum from you. She was at the docs yesterday as she is really wheezy right now, could be another chest infection on the way but lets hope not. Given Prednisilone and Amoxycillin for a week and Mucodyne capsules as well. She took the first Mucodyne capsule today and that experience seems to have put her off them for life. Coughing, retching and choking like you wouldn’t believe for a few hours so no more of them I right now I think.

Hope that all is well with you and it’s great to see you back here again!!

    You take care now,

    Gavin

    Hi, Gavin,
Be sure to say hi to your mum for me.
I think ,without change, USA Medicare ( health insurance provided by the government for people over 65)will be bankrupted in 2024, if I understand it correctly. The medical care for age below 65 may cost the same in the future but the limitation such as choosing your own doctors and hospitals as well as new drugs may be increased. Who knows which systems is better.
But for this disease, the answer lies on how you look at this disease and how you really want to be treated— since there is no cure at this point for it.
    God bless.
