Holly – for what you had done, 7 days in the hospital isn’t bad! My dads surgery won’t be too involved as it stands right now, but Dr. Kato said he might be in the hospital for 10-12 days. We are praying he gets to leave earlier than that! His surgery is 3/26. I am excited and dad is beyond nervous. I love Dr. Kato. He is amazing. I am staying at Aloft in Harlem. It’s about 240 a night, which is expensive, but it’s a 10 minute subway ride and near my NY office (I work out of Boston), so it’s more of a convenience. Do you have to pay to get over the bridge to and from the Crowne Plaza to NY Pres?
I, too, am a patient of Dr. Kato’s. I had a left hepatectomy on January 31st – – seems simple but I was in ICU 3 days and regular 4 more. Dr. Kato threw the surgery in between parts of a chemo-y90-chemo “sandwich” and took the main tumor even though he knew he was leaving lots of small itsy bitsy ones in the right lobe. Just out to reduce tumor burden in general. I had y90 three weeks in and chemo started again two weeks after that. Kind of the “kitchen sink” approach!We always stay at the crowne plaza hotel in engelwood – they have a special rate for New York Presbyterian patients and families and it is a quiet, nice place. – Holly

Mom had surgery Tuesday and was in ICU until Thursday am. She stayed in step down until this morning although they would have moved her earlier had there been a room available. I stayed in Fort Lee, nj as it is right over the bridge and its the closest place to stay. As long as you wait for rush hour to end it takes less than 10 minutes. Feel free to email me at laurengladstone@yahoo.com with any questions. I am from ny originally so I am familiar with the area and can recommend restaurants etc.
Considering the extent of the surgery and her age, she is doing beautifully. The care in ICU and step down is great. Every nurse is awesome. Being in a room has its challenges since the patient to nurse ratio improves.

Your post brought me so much joy today! I am so happy to hear of your mom’s success with Dr. Kato. My dad and I met with Dr. Kato for a consultation on March 1st. My dad will be getting surgery in the very near future. We are still unsure as to exactly the extent of the surgery, but there was mention of possibly having to remove 1/2 the liver and hepatic artery like your mom. I’m happy to know you are pleased with the care at NY Pres. I have heard nothing but good reviews. Did you stay at a near by hotel during your mom’s recovery? How has your mom’s recovery been?

-PamLAUREN, I love ending a day with such fabulous news and Mom gets YIPPEE! Oh My Goodness, this is just wonderful. I can feel your relief wafting all the way over here. I am wishing for a calm, comfortable and great recovery! Ican’t help it I have to give another YIPPEE!
I will be forever thankful to this board as I would have never found Dr. Kato. He successfully removed the tumor, half the liver, gallbladder and resected the hepatic artery and portal vein AND got clean margins. There is no doubt in my mind that you saved my mother’s life.
Dr. Kato recommends post op chemo, but I cannot discuss this with mom yet as she is only 6 days post op. She sailed through the 9 hour surgery with one day in ICU and she will leave step down when a bed becomes available. The care she is receiving at Columbia Presbyterian is outstanding. Dr. Kato is the most humble man I have ever met. He s truly a gift from God.
I haven’t been much of a contributor on this site, but I pray for all of the people on this site suffering from this awful disease.
