Victoria – I have been on chemo for three years and counting. It can be done. I feel my life has been proglonged by treatment and that I have still had excellent quality of life despite undergoing treatment. The worst of the side effects in my opinion is the nausea. There are a lot of good anti-nausea medications out there. Another side effect is fatigue. That can be handled by a good nap

I think that your brother will have breaks in between treatment cycles. Sometimes that is a month or three…all depending on your brother and his doctor. Anyway, that is what we see happen here often.
Dont forget your brother can stop treatment whenever HE chooses. That is one thing I really wish doctors and family members would come to understand. I read an article recently about end of life care and how so many patients feel they have to keep having treatment either because of pressure from doctors or loved ones. It is the patient and no one else who should decide how far and how long to go on treatment. Please remind your brother of that.

Ever since I heard the tape my brother Ned made of his oncologists diagnosis, and treatment plan, I’ve had something nagging at me. As I’ve said before, Ned has Stage IV cc with mets to abdoman and bone. The cancer was found when he complained about shoulder blade pain and pelvic pain. No matter, the thing that bothers me is when his doc described the treatment plan which was 10 days of radiation to spine immediately and then begin chemo with xeloda and gemzar. The IV one on day 1 and day 8 and after 3 wks of xeloda he gets 1 week off and then start over again. My brother’s question to the doc was “start over again for how long”? The doctor said, forever. I don’t get it, where’s the quality of life in that? I mean this stuff is poison so does this mean he takes this treatment until the chemo takes him out rather than the evil beast cc? I have not discussed this with my brother ( I live far away from him) but I had to get this off of my chest and I knew you would all let me say it. Have a blessed day all of you, Victoria
