Our only problem with insurance, Teddy is on CIGNA, was that they wanted the cancer to be at 6cm or less. They also wanted radiation first to shrink the tumor. I was very nervous about it as I pictured the tumor growing while we waited but he radiation starts “burning” it right away. Then I got nervous again as the last radiation was September 7th and the CK was December 19th. The radiologist said that the radiation continues to do its work for 3 months after you are done. He was right and it did its job. If the doctor feels it has a good chance of going, go for it. It’s amazing!!!
January 24, 2009 at 11:20 pm #25472amyleaSpectatorLainy, Another question… I am checking into CyberKnife for Mom. There is a location close to us. Is there a trick to getting insurance to pay for it? She is 67, so she is on Medicare. She also has a supplemental insurance. She hasn’t had to pay for much of anything yet. I read on the CyberKnife website that most insurances are accepted, but just wanted to check.
Thanks!
AmyJanuary 19, 2009 at 1:02 am #25471lainySpectatorCyberknife is wonderful! Very little side effect, just a little tired for about 2 weeks. Not as tired as radiation. The only thing I know is the cancer has to be 6 cm or less. When we started Teddy’s was 7 cm so we did the radiation first. Chemo will not or ever work for him. You might want to ask the doctor about the CK. I think it depends where the cancer is located. Location and size. And all it took was 3 sessions. Good luck.

I am so glad to hear that Teddy is doing great!!!!!
I have a question about Cyber Knife; Mom has three lymph nodes which the pet scan shows cancerous. They are in different spots, but they run in a line. Would Cyber Knife be an appropriate procedure for something like that? She has had two months chemo and we are waiting on the results of the latest PET scan to show what the next step is. The surgeon said that he believes that he can remove them, but I am just wondering about Cyber Knife as a back up if the surgery isn’t possible? The hospital we go to doesn’t offer Cyber Knife, but there is a hospital close which does it. Mom’s oncologist didn’t seem too sure about it, but it sounds like it worked for Teddy!
Thanks!
AmyJanuary 11, 2009 at 10:58 pm #25469marionsModeratorLainy….Teddy has been able to fight back over and over again with wonderful results. The two of you are such an inspiration to all of us. Thanks for that.

January 11, 2009 at 2:27 pm #25467marylloydSpectatorGreat news Lainy. I hope Teddy continues to be a walking miracle!! I guess they really do happen- I just wish they happened to more people. AT least they are coming up with more options like cyberknife. Eventually they will find a cure!! Best wishes, Mary

January 10, 2009 at 11:08 pm #1897lainySpectatorTeddy went to the Oncologist yesterday and had perfect LABs. Billie rubin was .04 and CA19-9 was 18. His energy is coming back and he also gained a couple pounds. Now we go back in to the monthly watch and keen eye. LABS every month and ONC every 2 months. We feel grateful, thankful and very blessed. We have bought time once again. There is hope! We are moving in to an apartment when we sell the house and with no obligations or chores of a house we will be ready for the next round, when ever it appears. Until then, we plan to enjoy and help everyone we possibly can. Cyber Knife is the BEST!
