My mom’s bilirubin was 142 today am really really happy that it is going down…

BUT am sad cause she has e-coli bacteria infection in the blood and is on antibiotics…how serious is this infection? anyone know? is it treatable? how long does it take to go away?

Oh and she is really swollen today, they gave her diuretics cause from the ultrasound they saw a bit of fluid but not enough to drain…do the diuretics work? i hope so :)

Why do I feel that we fix one thing and ruin another…these are all things that are not allowing her to get chemo and she needs it ASAP!!

The doctors may be waiting for the infection to clear. Have you been told what kind of bacteria is causing the infection? (Did they do a blood culture?) Hang in there. Infections are quite common with this disease and from what we have seen, on this board, often times aggressive treatments with the appropriate antibiotics bring about great results. I am wishing the same for your Mom. Also, I assume that the ultrasound did not detect any blood clots.
    All my best wishes,
    Marion

Thank you everyone, yes, my mom is in the hospital as we speak. She went through ER and is now an in-patient since last friday:

-She had a blockage, had a stent successfully done, bilirubin went from 270 to 171…so happy about this :)
-Has swelling in abdomen and thighs and now knees. They did an ultrasound and saw liquid in abdomen but not enough to drain therefore just waiting, although not sure what we’re waiting for on this one. Oh and they did not mention anything about diuretics so not sure what to think…
-AND now she has had fever since yesterday and is taking antibiotics through IV. They say she has a bacterial infection in the blood??? what is this? how is this caused? is it dangerous? should i worry? any info on this would be appreciated…

Her doctor says she absolutely needs chemo but we cannot start unless all of the above co-operate!!!! Please God help us!!! Please!! Thank you for listening :)

devastateddaughter: My husband Tom who also has CC just experienced the same thing, his abdomen was swollen, his thighs and his feet/ankles. He was inpatient when it started happening. He gained about 25 pounds like…overnight! First doc put him on a water pill and he peed off 11 pounds but regained it within a day or so. Then 2nd doc did an ultrasound to see if there was fluid in the abdomen (of course there was) and then did a paraenthesis (drained the fluid off his abdomen).

You may want to get your mom to the doctor to check for ASCITES as per my husband it was quite painful. Per the internet the paraenthesis can also be painful, but Tom reported that although the draining was uncomfortable (because the intestines were floating in the fluid and when the fluid is drained, the intestines return to their normal position it causes cramping) but not painful. The tiny puncture wound that they make to drain the fluid was sore afterward, but Tom was so relieved that the fluid was gone, he stated it was a small price to pay!

You need to get your mom to a doctor to check on whether or not is is Acites and to see if they will do a paraenthesis to drain the fluid off.

It took only one day for Tom’s thighs and feet to go back to ‘normal’ after his paraenthesis.

Go with God and KEEP KICKIN’ THAT cancer.

    Hi there,

It could well be ascites that is causing the swelling in your mums thighs and stomach. My dad had this and his swelling also went up to his thighs, but his feet and ankles were swollen as well, as was his stomach.

Here are some links on this.

I hope that you can get your mum seen by a doctor so that this can be looked into as there are things that can be done for this and meds that can be given as well. I think my dad was given Furosemide for it.

    Best wishes,

    Gavin

Yes she is in hospital because she had a blockage and has a lot of pain and now the swelling. She has swelling in her stomach also, her stomach is quite swollen too. Her feet or her ankles are not swollen yet….

    Thanks again everyone!

PS: i did try the search but nothing came up that is why I was wondering if anyone heard of this and what it means or what to do?

    Hi there,

Does your mum have swelling anywhere else, such as feet, ankles or around her stomach? And I agree with Lisa about trying to get your mum seen by a doctor as soon as you can. Is your mum in hospital just now?

    Best wishes,

    Gavin
