I just picked it up from the pharmacy. It is in the same section as the normal Gravol. I should mention that I don’t suffer with nausea, but I bought the ginger gravol because it wouldn’t make me drowsy if I ever needed it.
I hope your mom is doing well,
MelJanuary 17, 2010 at 3:35 am #34015scragglesMemberMy mom’s oncologist is also Dr. Knox, I’m not sure about Dr. Horgan though, but it sounds familiar, so maybe. I will tell her about the ginger gravel. Where do you get that? I’ve never heard of that before. Thank you.
January 16, 2010 at 7:04 pm #34014mlodgeSpectatorHi Scraggles,
I too am being treated at PMH for stage IV cholangiocarcinoma – unresectable. My oncologists are Dr Knox and Dr Horgan – both of them excellent. My radiologist is Dr Rebecca Wong – a person with whom some of the doctors at MD Anderson in Houston consult with regularly with this disease.
Sometimes I take ginger gravol. It doesn’t make me drowsy at all. Perhaps that might help your mom.
All the best,
MelJanuary 16, 2010 at 6:14 pm #34013gavinModeratorHi Scraggles,
I also hope that things get better for your mum real soon. My dad went through a variety of different nausea meds and a combination also of different types. What we were told is that some meds work for some people but not for others, so perhaps it is a case of finding the right med that works for your mum and I hope you will get more answers on Tuesday with this.
Here’s a link that may help with this –
My best wishes to you and your mum

January 16, 2010 at 5:29 am #34012scragglesMemberShe didn’t ask for another nauseant drug. She is back on gravel. It seems to do the job but it just makes her sleep the day away. She said she will talk to her doc about it on Tuesday when she goes in for another round of chemo. Right now nothing is working for the nausea (or maybe she just hasn’t tried the “right” drug for her) The nurses told her that nausea would be normal after the chemo (she just had chemo on Tues). Right now my biggest concern is the ascetis. I’m getting worried because I don’t see any improvement. I’m also really worried because she is hardly eating. I sure hope things get better soon.
Thank you so much for your help!
January 15, 2010 at 11:01 pm #34011gavinModeratorHi Scraggles,
I know that you say that your mum is back on Gravel as the new anti-nausea med did not work for your mum. But have you discussed with your mums docs about the possibility of trying another different anti-nausea med?
My dad had issues with sickness so I know what you are going through.
My best wishes to you and your mum

January 15, 2010 at 8:37 pm #34010marionsModeratorscraggles….many times we have seen, on this board, that people were not good candidates for a paranthesis. Has the nausea been brought under control?
Best wishes,
MarionJanuary 15, 2010 at 8:27 pm #34009scragglesMemberMy mom just informed me that at her last doc appt they said that it would be better not to drain it at this time because she is active with chemo, and it could cause an infection, and she is on blood thinners at the moment because of a blood clot in her spleen. They will assess the situation again in 2 weeks.
January 15, 2010 at 7:47 pm #34008scragglesMemberLainy- she hates needles and is tired of all her doc appointments but I will inform her that the procedure is not that bad. It is also discouraging to know that she will have to have it done on a weekly basis. She had some of the fluid extracted for analysis before her diagnosis and she said it was very painful. She even said that it was worse then childbirth!
Raye – thanks so much! Any info that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. She is currently on chemo with Gemcitabine and Cistlapin, but she is not a candidate for surgery because she is stage IV.
Thanks so much for all the support and advice!
January 15, 2010 at 5:49 pm #34007rayeMemberScraggle,
Raye here in Chatham Ontario. Should you have need of any information regarding services provided by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care with regard to funding for certain chemotherapies and surgeries , if required, give me a holler here and I’ll look through ‘the maze’ of forms for you when dealing with the government health agents. My past experience has shown that the doctors and health care providers are not really abreast of all the Ministry has to offer.
If I can be of any help please don’t hesitate to ask.
January 15, 2010 at 4:56 pm #34006lainySpectatorHi Scraggles. Is it the needles themselves that is bothering your mom? Perhaps if someone could tell her it is not bad? We have had many people on our site had their ascetis drained and no one has ever said it was horrible. Some people go in weekly.Perhaps if someone could explain just how the procedure goes it would give mom more comfort. I know I like everything explained to me then I can face what I have to do. Just a thought.
January 15, 2010 at 4:16 pm #34005scragglesMemberMom’s not feeling well at all. The doctor prescribed another drug for her nausea but she switched back to gravel because the other one “knocks” her out. She is very tired and not eating much. Sometimes she goes a couple of days in a row without eating anything. Now we think the ascetis is the cause. The doc said they could drain it but mom doesn’t want to because of the needles and it’s just going to come back anyway. She just completed her 2nd round of chemo and I am getting nervous because the ascites is not not getting better. My family doc told me that you’ll know if the chemo is working if the ascites gets better. She is weak and I am nervous. What an aweful disease this is. She was diagnosed on December 21st, and she doesn’t seem to be getting better at all. Thanks for your concern. You are all great!
January 15, 2010 at 4:16 am #34004momsdaughterSpectatorHi Scraggles
How is your mom doing? Haven’t heard from you in a while and I just hope all is well.
Best wishes!
January 6, 2010 at 9:26 pm #34003lalupesSpectatorA big welcome from me, too, Scraggles. I do hope your mum is feeling stronger & that the Onc was able to help you relieve her nausea.
My very best wishes to you & your family.

December 31, 2009 at 7:11 pm #34002gavinModeratorHi Scraggles,
My dad had a lot of issues with vomiting so I know what you are going through. Have you tried different types of anti sickness meds or is gravel the first one your mum has tried? The reason I ask is that we were told that some meds may work better with some people than others. Maybe you could talk with your mums doctors about trying a different type of medication.
Best wishes to you and your family for the new year.
Gavin
