About 2 years ago my mom had to have surgery and when the Anesthesiologist came in to prep her he rubbed an oil on her temples and dabbed under her nose. It was either peppermint or ginger oil. Likewise my sister in law will use Ginger pills to help with nausea. Might just be a couple more things to try.

Well, that is good news. My mom keeps getting those UIT’s and they are very uncomfortable and can do crazy things to your whole system. Who ever thought we would all get so excited for chemo to start???? Take the good news and run with it!!! Thanks for the update.
Hello all. Just an update on my Mom. The infection turned out to be caused from 2 things the stent and a UTI. They put her on IV antibiotics for 10 days 3 times a day. She is still in the hospital but may be discharged on tuesday,hopefully. She seems to be doing well. Radiation wont start until the 13th of september. (Seems too long in my opinion) but who knows! As a matter of fact she looks so well its hard to believe she has this horrible disease. The vomiting she had has subsided but the nauseous feeling is still there. Thank you all for lending an ear and I pray for everyone of you everyday!!
You and your Mom are in our thoughts, I hope they can get that temp under control & keep her comfortable.

Mom’s still in the hospital her WBC has gone down and she is on antibiotics for a UTI. She was doing well but now for some reason she has a temp of 101.4. Dont know yet whats causing this. I’ll keep you updated and Thanks for your support.
I was asked if I had a Living Will when I went for my annual Mammogram. I use the hospital’s women’s imaging center and it really is protocol to ask.
When hospitalized – if you don’t have a living will or DNR order and want to enact them, provided you are of sound mind the hospital will send staff to your room to complete these documents at least that’s been my experience. The other thing I remember is that I had to bring a copy each time my dad was admitted. They didn’t seem to keep a copy in his active file.

Hi, It’s really hard to go through with a parent, particularly when they can’t find the location of the infection. My Dad went through the same thing. They also brought living will papers into Dad – Mom thought it was protocol for inpatients on the cancer floor. Dad had a biliary cath instead of the stent and they finally determined that they believed this was the source of his infection, and they kept him in the hospital for a week until they could get it under control. I wish your Mom well and hope that they can get that infection & dehydration under control so she can go home!

Yes, it is protocol for a hospital to ask for a living will and a DNR statement. Do not recessitate. In fact I have just updated mine for my upcoming surgery. Make sure they make a copy of it for her file so you don’t run into that again. They require it now even for a hang nail. Sounds like the doctors are acting now but down the road if you feel things are not going right don’t forget your right to ask for other opinions. I think if you read up on this CC you will be a stronger advocate for your mother and actually will allay your fears and your fight for her will overtake the fear. To be for armed is to be for warned. Good luck.
Well my mom was admitted to the hospital today after lab work done yesterday showed a high WBC and she was also dehydrated due to the vomiting. They think she might have an infection going on somewhere because of her high WBC but just dont know where yet. The Dr’s mentioned to us twice about a living will , Is that protocol? I dont know if I mentioned in my previous messages that before she was discharged from the hospital last time they placed a biliary stent to drain the bile that was causing the jaundice and itching. I am so worried about her. Thank you all in advance for your responses.

I’m sorry to hear your news about your mom. I agree that second opinions are necessary for this disease. Please look into microspheres – using the search function on this site. This also reminds me – Gary was supposed to be getting microsphere treatment with dr. Kennedy in no. carololina soon.. Any updates??

If you want to try a non-prescription remedy that sometimes helps fight nausea and gets a little nourishment that might stay down, may I suggest sucking on hard peppermint candy? Candy canes or the starlight candies helped me, though I didn’t really try them when vomiting was active. If you don’t want that much sugar, I suspect mint tea would also be soothing.
I also lost about 35 pounds before diagnosis, but once treatment started, weight loss was more controlled. Of course, I had the weight to lose and am still heavier than my ideal.

Hello and welcome. Sorry for what you, your Mom and your family are going through. There may be some options that your doc can offer specific to appetite stimulants or anti-nausea, to bring your Mom more comfort. As Marion mentioned, second opinions are always a good idea- to get an idea of what additional options your Mom may be a candidate for. My Dad had cc, and the group on this board was a wonderful support- I hope that we can be the same for you as questions arise.
