So glad you’re having a great trip home! We’ve definitely settled into fall here in Seattle…that’s mostly gray and in the 50’s…so high 80’s sounds wonderful.
Sorry none of the tips helped but maybe Jeff’s baked potato will…worth a try!!!

October 18, 2008 at 1:17 pm #23287jeffgMemberHi Kris , I’m happy your enjoying your visit at home. Just wanted to add to your list of remedies for gas. I have discovered a baked potatoe with peeling, around brunch time eliminates my burping or gas completely. I use the microwave. No seasonings or butter. Just a plain ole fluffy potatoe. fills the empty void in the stomach and the starch absorbs the excess acid that causes the gas. Also, a couple pieces of plain with bread with a little water. Works for me.
Enjoy and have fun. We are thinking of going to my Sister’s for Thanksgiving in Cary, North Carolina. We’ll see how things pan out. Such pretty country.
Cheerio,
JeffOctober 18, 2008 at 12:30 am #23286lisaSpectatorI’ve only been to the South once, but I loved that sweet tea! YUM!
I hope you enjoy your time in SC. Get a tan for me, eh?
October 17, 2008 at 11:31 pm #23285devoncatSpectatorHi Jean,
Thanks for all the gas info. I have purchased my weight in tums, gax pills and other goodies since my return to SC. Word to the wise….no gavascon pills as they foam up in the mouth as you chew and the foam gets stuck in your teeth.I have been really enjoying being home. It has been in the high 80s and it wasnt that hot in Sweden this summer so I am loving it (though I packed winter clothes so I have had to borrow from my sister)
I have noticed that I have started to feel like poop the last couple of days and I think it has to do with my massive intake of sweet tea. I have increased my sugar intake by about 400% since I got back and it is all down to sweet tea. I am going to cut back on that and see if it helps. My sister was at first disgusted with all my burping, but I think she is used to it now.

I saw a pamphlet today and remembered that you had posted about this…”What I need to Know About Gas”!!!! It’s put out by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Anyway, it has some good points:
Changing what you eat and drink can help prevent or relieve gas:
Cut down on foods that cause gas. The amount of gas caused by certain foods varies from person to person. The only way to know your own limits is through trial and error. These are some foods that cause gas:
–beans
–vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, onions, artichokes, and asparagus
–fruits such as pears, apples, and peaches
–whole grains such as whole wheat bread and bran
–soft drinks and fruit drinks
–milk and milk products, such as cheese and ice cream
–packaged foods that have lactose in them, such as bread, cereal, and salad dressing
–dietetic foods and sugar free candies and gumsDrink plenty of water, non fizzy liquids, and clear soup. Try not to drink liquids that cause gas, like soda and beer, If you do drink these liquids, pour into a glass first to let some of the fizz out.
Reduce the amount of air you swallow by:
–Eat slower and chew more to cut down on the amount of air you swallow when you eat.
–Avoid chewing gum and eating hard candy.Keep a diary. Write down the foods and the amounts that seem to cause you the most problems.
I don’t know if this is helpful or not. Most are obvious, but there were a number of things that I hadn’t thought of e.g. whole grains, fruit, cheese, and packaged foods with lactose (salad dressing!). Just in case any of this might help, I thought I would pass it along.
Also, though this may have been mentioned, any over the counter medication with simethicone. “Gas-X” is a common brand here in the states. The dosage is 125 mg. and the directions are to take 1-2 capsules after meals and at bedtime, not to exceed 4 capsules in 24 hours.
It’s such an uncomfortable and painful problem, I also have problems with this at times and the simethicone really does help…now I’m going to look at my diet more!
When are you going home or are you already there? Have a very good trip home in any case!
Thinking of you!

Yes that is the type of insurance I am talking about. If I had no existing medical condition then I could quite easily purchase a family policy for trips to the States for a year for less than $200. However, as soon as you declare a condition the insurers go into hiding since they are faced with a real risk. This restricts choice quite dramatically. Anyone following my adventures here will know that I have two existing conditions. As well as the cc I also have angina. I spent hours trawling the internet and could only find one UK insurer who would take me on, but that was on the basis I was not having ongoing treatment. I know for most things in the financial market, you have to be resident in the country of the provider. So I would not be able to purchase insurance from a US company. In any case, my experience is that insurance is much more expensive in the States than in the UK.
All the best

October 6, 2008 at 1:41 am #23282lainySpectatorHi all travelers. I have been a travel consultant for 30 years and more and more people are now buying insurance just for air. Not sure how it works form another country but we have insurance here that covers pre medical conditions. If you have a non refundable ticket and get delayed in another country your change of air is covered also covers getting sick in another country. Not sure that is what you are talking about you can pull up one of the more popular ones, Travel Guard and see what the rules are.

Travel Insusrance is a bit of a misnomer. It covers delay or cancellation of holiday, loss or damage to baggage and property, some personal liability insurance but mainly, medical cover. Coming to the States I look for medical cover ofOctober 5, 2008 at 9:48 pm #23280jeffgMemberRon, My brother in law and wife were planning to come for a visit from England. When Trevor explained they have to purchase medical insurance to go on holiday, it blew my mind. He told me you have to. Has it always been that way? Is this something the travel agencies say is required or is it really law. The airlines don’t monitor this when you by a ticket direct do they? Sorry if a little off subject, but if someone in the United Kingdom wanted to travel to another country to get medical help for CC, just don’t sound right. Wow, the 8 years I lived in the UK, neither my wife or I had to pay insurance to get a airline ticket. What else are they going to come up with next? Sorry, I wonder if I buy the tickets and send to them, if they would be required to buy insurance. Sorry for getting off track, but it’s not fair just because you have cc, you shouldn’t have to pay such a rediculous fee for insurance. If you bought a ticket directly with an airline ,do you have to provide an Insurance number now? Wow!
God Bless Ya!

Would your parent’s insurance give you some medical cover? We tend to forget how well set up we are in the UK, for buying package holidays and all the paraphernalia that goes with them, like travel and medical insurance. I’ll keep an eye out for any breakthrough with Macmillan Nurses and travel insurance, but have some doubt that it will apply to the States. Can you not get medical cover on the internet? That’s how I’ve managed to get it in the past. The company I used is called Free Spirit Travel Insurance but that probably just applies to the UK.
Enjoy your holiday.

October 5, 2008 at 6:54 pm #23278devoncatSpectatorYikes Ron. That is expensive insurance. I am being very silly and just crossing my fingers and toes and hopping on a plane without insurance. I have been trying to get it worked out but I cant find any that covers me as a Swedish resident and my husband is sitting on his patootie not helping just repeating that we get insurance when we buy a ticket with a credit card. I know….dont get me started. But Ron, I think there are trying to make changes in travel insurance for people with cancer…McMillan Nurses have been running a campaign so dont give up, things might change soon.
I will try to get hold of that wonderful cure all called Irn Bru. I think I will have to wait till I either go to Scotland or Russia to pick it up.

October 5, 2008 at 6:31 pm #23277ron-smithMemberOK Kris, I know I will be accused of being flippant, but what the heck!
If all else fails, try a large glass of……………………..Barr’s Irn Bru. Good for most ailments.
Enjoy your holiday. How long are you away for? Since I started Chemo I have now given up any hope of returning to Florida. No company will now entertain offering me insurance. Even if they did I could never afford the premium. In May, before I had any treatment, the premium for me alone, just for 3 weeks in Florida, was over
October 5, 2008 at 5:04 am #23276devoncatSpectatorThanks everyone. When I go home, I will stock up on the different concoctions! I have tried the yogart thing but maybe I didnt keep it up long enough.

October 4, 2008 at 11:08 pm #23275lisaSpectatorI’ll try the Danactive. My kids are complaining about my indiscreet farts!
October 4, 2008 at 2:15 pm #23274suzannegmMemberHi Kris,
I was having gas and smelly bm’s. My nutritionist suggested buying Danactive drinkable yogurt (it’s a 3 oz. tiny bottle). I drink 1 a day. It will balance the floura (sp?) in your digestive tract. It’s done wonders for me. My gas wasn’t painful, just constant. Now it’s more “normal”. Plus the smell is gone. Sorry to be a bit gross, but this was a problem for me. But the Danactive made a big difference. I got the pomegranite/berry flavor. Good luck. -
