Andi…..No, it is not a Klatskin tumor rather, it appears to be be perihilar cholangiocarcinoma, which appears near the confluence (joining) of the bile ducts. I sure hope for the next week to finally bring about some answers to the consistent problems your Dad is encountering. This has been a tough ride for your family. Hang in there. I am crossing my fingers for Tuesday.

    Marion,

Dads report mentions Extrahepatic CC. Whenever they drawer a picture for us it is always a Y shape, and Dads tumour sits in the middle of the Y, outside the liver near the gallbladder. They said if it had grown anywhere else, due to it’s size it wouldn’t have caused jaundice (it’s 1.8cm) but it has grown right in the middle, therefore causing a blockage. We did find out it caused his shrivelled Gallbladder as the bile stopped going there and caused this to happen.

Would it be a Klatskin tumour? I did mention to the oncologist but he said he was getting too technincal, ge only knew it has Cholangiocarcinoma. I have never asked the Doctors as they always say Extrahepatic CC.

The lastest is Dad is booked in next Tuesday for them to look at his stents, they are thinking of doing it via ERCP instead of the usual PCT. They also mentioned Dad being on antibiotics all the while to help stop the infections. They have given him Augmentin antibiotics, inhope that it is an infection and this will clear it up, they have told him to keep his Oncolgy appointment tomorrow so he is still in their system. He is very down at the moment as once again chemo has been cancelled and he is obviously not looking forward to another hospital stay. Mom is also finding the set backs very hard.

    Best wishes

Andie….has Klatskin tumor been mentioned? (Hilar cholangiocarcinoma.) It occurs at the confluence of the right and left hepatic bile ducts.

Radiation/chemotherapy initially helped shrink my tumor from 6 cm to 2 cm. I think radiation is worth a try. A friend of mine had radiation and had acupuncture at the same time to counter the fatiguing effects of radiation and it seemed to work well for her.

    Thank all,

Whilst my Dads tumour is small, it is inoperable due to being close to portal vein/arteries. This may make Radiation not an option but I will still ask Dad to mention it to the oncologist Wednesday. Dads tumour is in the Y section on the bile duct.

Andie….Cyberknife is one of several Stereotactic radiosurgery treatments; the others include Gamma Knife, Novalis, Primatom, Synergy, X-Knife, TomoTherapy and Trilogy. This type of radiation is suitable only for small tumors. The other most important criteria is the location of the tumor as there cannot be involvement with blood vessels. Treatments are given with extreme accuracy and the goal is to limit damage to healthy tissue. A radiation oncologist would evaluate your Dad’s records and determine whether this type of treatment could be considered. I hope this helped. Good luck.

    Hi Andie,

The Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Hertfordshire is an NHS hospital and is due to open their Cyberknife centre this Autumn so maybe that is worth looking into? I guess trying to get funding for it through your dads local care trust may be tricky, but perhaps it may be worth speaking to the onc about, especially if he thinks it may be of use to your dad.

Many people get very positive responses from radiation. I was not one of them, but Kristin was.

My Dad meets with his oncologist again on Wednesday. Twice now his chemo has been cancelled due to high bilirubin. I was wondering if Radiation would be possible instead. Does anyone know what the bilirubin has to be for this? Has anyone had good experience with Radiation? I want to find out as much information so we can perhaps suggest this to the oncologist. Because Gem/Cis is the standard that is all they seem to want to do but if Dad is going to keep getting high bilirubin we need to perhaps look at a different route.

I have enquired about Cyberknife and there is no limit on bilirubin but it will cost
