Pamela, if it´s possible, can you ask the doctor why he says no to Curcumin?
If it´s just because he doesn´t know anything about it, or because he knows something about it I don´t.I ask you because the many studies (to be found in pubmed) of it´s efficacy to help the body to fight side-effects, protect the organs and reduce the risk of resistance against chemo as well as killin
My doctor, oncologist AND liversurgeon, says yes.
Hugs!!

July 17, 2012 at 2:55 am #62830melissapalmaSpectatorI’m thinking about you and Lauren and hoping that this new chemo will be more effective. I also got some bad news from Dr. Z today about my mom. Oof.
-MelissaJuly 16, 2012 at 9:47 pm #62829pamelaSpectatorHi Maria,
Lauren was on Gem+Cisplatin+5FU for a really long time. Then she was on Gem+5FU. Her doctor wanted to try something new since she got a new tumor being on those chemos. We’ve heard about curcumin and we asked her doctor about it and he said NO. So we are being good and doing what he says. The Oxaliplatin has been hard on her this first time. She is still tired and had the chemo last Wed. She does stuff but wears out quickly. I hope she starts feeling better soon. Her doctor said he was giving her a hefty dose so that it probably why it is knocking her down. Her neuropathy is better than when she first had the chemo. Thanks for caring, Maria. You sure are a super woman!!
Love, -Pam
July 16, 2012 at 8:07 pm #62828mariaSpectatorPamela, I had 13 rounds of Gemzar+Oxaliplatin May 2010-Feb 2011 and then had to change it because of the neuropathy. It worked all the way though. I was able to work, train, travel etc during this period (And I´m so much older then Lauren!)
Why doesn´t she get a Gemcitabine-combo?I would like to recommend her to take Turmeric (curcumin), I have done this since I got my diagnosis, and there are lots of studies on it´s effect on cancer being done at the moment.
Here is a new one, very interesting, concerning neuropathy caused by Cis/Oxaliplatin. It´s done on mice, but as it´s not hamful….
The nurses where I am being treated was astonished that I tolerated Oxaliplatin for 13 rounds without worse neuropathy. Turmeric?? Maybe.http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22648527
Anyway, the neuropathy went away in a couple of months afterwards, and has not returned yet. I´m currently on Cisplatin+Gemzar.
Keep on fighting!!!
Love to both of you.
/MariaJuly 15, 2012 at 7:22 am #62827nancy246SpectatorHi Pam, Not the news I wanted to read, but you and Lauren and the rest of your family are such positive fighters. Maybe this new concoction is exactly what Lauren needs to give this cancer a big enough kick to get a resection! I think of your family battle all the time (as they say a person does not get cancer, a family does) and am constantly sending positive thoughts! Tell Lauren my youngest daughter, Tamia (who is also 25), reads this board and we are both rooting for her! Sending love and hugs from Revelstoke B.C.
NancyJuly 12, 2012 at 7:03 pm #62826gavinModeratorHi Pam,
Thanks for the link to your blog, I love it and the pics! Hopefully the side effects of Lauren’s chemo will pass quickly for her and loads of positive thoughts coming over yours and her way from over here.
Hugs to you both,
Gavin

I love the blog! Those dogs are so stinking cute.
I’m sorry to hear Lauren is getting sensitive to cold sensations. Hopefully, it will not last long. Lauren has been handling chemo so well so far, I’m hopeful it will continue with her new regimen.
Keep us posted.Susie
July 12, 2012 at 6:06 pm #62825lainySpectatorPam, that Blog was amazing! I felt like I was right there with all of you. Beautiful house, pond, area, people and weekend for you all. So glad you got away with a change of atmosphere. I am sure Lauren is going to kick the CC butt again!
July 12, 2012 at 5:39 pm #62824pamelaSpectatorThanks for your kind words, Eli.
Well, Lauren had her chemo yesterday. She is definitely feeling the effects of the Oxaliplatin. Sensitivity to cold and one of her hands is numb. She said it kind of hurt to walk on the cold bathroom floor. Other than that, she feels fine. How long did it usually take for all of your symptoms to subside for all of you that have taken or are on this chemo? i posted a new blog today if anyone is interested. If you don’t have the site it is:

Thanks and hugs to all.
-PamJuly 12, 2012 at 1:29 am #62823EliSpectatorPamela,
I am very sorry to hear your news. Please stay strong and keep up the fighting attitude. I hope that Xeloda and Oxaliplatin work wonders for Lauren.
My best wishes to you and Lauren. You two are always in my thoughts.

EliJuly 11, 2012 at 6:36 pm #62822pamelaSpectatorTiff,
He said it is because he is putting her on a three week schedule. He said he is giving her a large dose of Oxaliplatin and 14 days of Xeloda. Then one week off. He thought this would be better for us as in traveling a long way. He said if she had 5-FU, she would have to be treated every two weeks. So, I guess that is the reason.

July 11, 2012 at 4:35 am #62821tiff1496MemberPam….the only thing I worry about is 5fu and xeloda being the same thing. MDA let me choose between the two, saying that theatre the same drug. Please ask your doctor about it!
