P.S. Meant to say “if he is not far from NYC…..” – and – “the drain may help relieve…” – Sorry, I’m tired and my typing is atrocious right now.
January 7, 2011 at 3:01 am #46475bettyanneSpectatorI am so sorry to hear about your Uncle. My Dad was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering in Long Island. They have centers in commack and I think garden city. The website is mskcc.org. He had Gemzar for almost a year. He lived with a very good quality of life for over 2 years. My Dad had the drain put in and did great with it. He would have it changed when he developed a fever or infection. It is much easier than a colostomy bag. He could turn it off during the day so he didn’t have to wear the bag and would let it drain at night. Good Luck to you.

Sorry to meet you this way, but you’ve come to the right place for some great advice and help. I’m from NJ and don’t know a lot about Long Island, but if he is not from from NYC, Sloane Kettering is one of the best cancer hospitals around. However, I can only offer this advice from my side of the fence: if he can have the chemo close to home, it is sometimes a better option. You could go to Sloane for their advice on what the best chemo procedure is, but have the chemo done at a local cancer center or hospital. My son was seen and had some procedures in NY, Maryland and Minnesota, but we wound up doing his chemo close to home at the suggestion of the doctors at the Mayo Clinic. I’m glad we did. He had so many complications and problems that it was easier being only 20 minutes from the hospital that was treating him. Anyway – that gives you something to think about. My prayers and thoughts are with you, your uncle, and your family. It’s a tough diagnosis. Also – the drain may have relieve a lot of his symptoms right now. Best of luck and keep us posted – Nancy
January 7, 2011 at 2:16 am #4586nallenSpectatorHello,
I’m so glad to have found this board. So sorry that everyone here is battling (or has a loved one battling) this awful disease. You’re all in my prayers. Just yesterday, my uncle was just diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma. He’s 82 years old and went to the hospital with discolored stool, a distended stomach, jaundice and some trouble breathing. They discovered a 9 cm mass on his liver and after some testing diagnosed him with cholangiocarcinoma. The surgeon said it’s not operable. He said radiation is not an option either. He suggested chemo and also suggested having a drain put in. My uncle is in Long Island, NY. Does anyone have suggestions for a doctor in that area? What about treatment options given his condition. We have not been told an official “stage” yet. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much and again, I’ll keep all of you in my prayers.
Noreen
