This information is very interesting and compelling, especially since my mom has recently had a significant increase in the pain she is experiencing. The doctor has increased her pain meds quit a bit. That has helped, but still has not provided complete relief.

Our problem is that we do not live in a state which has legalized the use of medical cannabis, so as much as I would love to encourage my mom to try something like the “brownies”, I don’t know that that is an option for us.

Any more information someone can provide about this would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

    Take care,

    Hi Ashley,

My mom also has stage IV inoperable cc, and I was wondering more about the genetic testing that you mention. I would really like to learn more about it. Could you tell me where you got the information about the BRCA testing and its connection to cancers such as CC, colon, etc.

    Thank you!

    Hi Sarah,

My mom was diagnosed in March 2010. She quickly began treatment with gem/cis. That was effective for awhile, but then stopped showing results. So her doctors switched her to Folfox, which is 5FU and oxylaplatin. She has only had a few treatments, so other than 1 encouraging CA-19 result, too soon to know how it is working.
However, my main reason for posting is to let you know about a recently published study about a drug called Cetuximab. You can read about it here in the “New Developments” section on this site.
Best wishes to you and your husband.

Thank you for your replies everyone. I will pass on your suggestions to my mom, and hopefully we’ll find a magic trick! Kristin, I will definitely call an acupuncturist here in town, and see if that might help too. Thanks for confirming that it is worth at least checking into!

Best wishes to everyone affected by this (and any other) cancer. Please know that you have a tidal wave of energy and support behind you!

    Kathy,

I so glad the WBC is back up! My mom is facing the same situation. When she starts chemo again, she will also be on a lower dosage of gemzar (25% decrease I think) to prevent the WBC from getting too low again. I do sometimes wonder though, why she can’t stay on the same dosage but do the shots? I guess the doctor know’s why he is doing what he is doing!

Anyway, I’m glad your treatment is back on track. Best wishes!

    Dear Daughter,

I just wanted to let you know that I understand how difficult things are for you and your family right now, as my mom was also recently diagnosed. I am so sorry for what you, and everyone on this site, is going through.

Having said that, you have to try to stay as positive as you can. This site has been absolutely wonderful, and makes me feel like at least my family and I can be empowered with knowledge, not to mention the amazing support of so many fantastic people.

My mom is currently doing the gemzar/cisplatin combination, as that’s what her doctor recommended. She has completed 4 cycles, and her CA 19-9 levels have come way down. However, her white blood cell count is too low for another cycle right now, so she’s taking a bit of a break.

Hopefully you are finding this site as helpful as I am. Best wishes to you and your family.

    Hi Linda,

I am sorry that you didn’t get better news about your past chemo. Know that lots of people are thinking of you and cheering you on. The clinical trial that you will be beginning sounds very promising and I wish you the best results!

Thank you Kris and Kim! It is so beneficial to hear how other people have handled situations that you are facing, and to know that everything is going to be okay! Your advice and words of encouragement are very helpful.

My mom’s local doctor mentioned shots as well (he did not say a name), but acted like they were not his top option right now because they are difficult to time with her chemo schedule. I’m not sure why that is, as other people don’t seem to have a problem determining when to give the shot during their treatment. Hopefully the time off will give my mom’s counts the chance to recover, and then with a lower dosage, they won’t get too low again and it won’t even be an issue. Keeping my fingers crossed! (and lots of prayers!)

Thanks again everyone. Wishing you all the best.

    Hi Jackie,

My mom has, besides the primary tumor in bile duct, what they called “lesions” that are suspicious of cancer in both her liver and hip bone. After 3 cycles of gemzar/cisplatin combo, her latest MRI showed her primary tumor has shrunk slightly and the “lesions” appear the same. They recommended keeping with gem/cis treatment for 5 more cycles, and then reevaluating at that point.

No doctor has mentioned radiation for the met on hip bone. Is that something I should ask about? Maybe they just want to get the chemo in first.

Best wishes to you, and everyone on this site in finding success!

Thanks everyone! Your words of kindness and compassion mean so much, as well as your helpful suggestions and website links.

My mom is taking anti-nausa medications. I’m not sure which ones, as they have been trying different ones since none she has tried have done the trick. The good news is, it’s mostly just in the mornings (occasionally other times later in the day), so once she gets past that she can keep things down.

You all have such amazing strength, and are truly inspirational to others. Thanks again for your help. I look foward to continuing to be in contact!
