Lainy,
Mom had mets to the lungs when she was diagnosed. Towards the end she had some ascites but the fluid was loculated ( “in pockets”) and I believe contributed to the back and stomach pains since we were unable to remove it.
We had a wonderful hospital bed that had a mattress that would routinely cycle from normal to firm. That really seems to help as did being able to raise and lower the head and foot of the bed. Mom also had morphine but she also had a fentynel patch for the break through pain.
I’m praying for both of you. Lainy, Teddy chose well when he made you his wife. You are amazing. We are all walking this pathway with you in spirit.
Hugs to you both!
PamNovember 4, 2010 at 2:07 am #43696lainySpectatorAh yes, We have a sheepskin that his grandkisa bought himm when he had his surgery 5 years ago. And it does wash beautifully. Ihave had that in his recliner like his little nest but I am thinking we are heading beyond that. We decided tonight to roder a Hospital bed Friday and to have themup his Morph. Thanks for the great idea and others will take note of it as well.
November 4, 2010 at 1:03 am #43695sunshinecaregiverMemberLainy, Have you tried a sheepskin? Patients like to feel the softness when they cuddle on them and they are washable. I looked up on line, but you can probably purchase from a medical supply store in your area. Hope things improve for both of you.

I just wanted to add my thoughts and prayers at this time. I am sorry to hear that Teddy is getting more pain but it sounds like they can do something about it at least.
Sending you both hugs and best wishes from across the pond
JemimaNovember 3, 2010 at 11:18 pm #43693valjeeMemberHi Lainey, have nothing useful to add on this as no experience in the field. Just want to say that like everyone else, I’m thinking of you often & sending lots of good wishes & hugs for comfort, for you both & always the hope of a good hand. Lots of love Val xxx

If Teddy decides an “adjustable bed” would be the thing, he might like it. My dad had a hospital bed a few days before he died this fall. He really liked it and it did make him more comfortable. The bed was put in the living room which worked out nice as there was a big window in that room.
I’m like, Kris: too much time in bed (as I experienced a year ago fall during treatment) my back hurt.
Thank you for keeping us updated on two of our favorite sweethearts on this board. You are both loved by many.

Dave has back pain as well. I rub his back nightly as well. He tells me that he can’t get comfortable because of the weight loss, and being so boney. He is very thin, and I can count the bones in his back.
Thinking of you so much…HUGS your way!!!

I’m sorry Teddy is showing signs of decline, and I understand the “pit of the stomach” feeling you get with each new thing. When I look back on Gary’s rather sudden prognosis of “weeks to live”, I’m amazed to remember how quickly we switched to “let’s find the right hospice” mode. CC always seems to up the ante, doesn’t it? In Gary’s case, his pain and sedation meds were gradually increased over a number of days until he was unresponsive and breathing more and more shallowly. At that point the hospice people were pretty accurately able to determine how long he had left. The sedation was particularly useful during the last 1-2 days when Gary would go through an aggitated state and insist on being helped to the recliner eventhough he had been seemingly unconscious the minute before. I’m only telling you these details because I know you’ve expressed an interest in being informed and want to be prepared. The progression towards the end continues in the same manner as the course of the disease has for all these years….day by day, then hour by hour.Thinking of you everyday, praying for a peaceful passing, Elaine

You are so right in that making Teddy comfortable is the highest priority right now. And another thing that helped my dad a lot was his hospice bed. He was able to raise the back bit of it so that he could sit up in bed and still keep his legs flat. This way he could sit there when we were around him and he felt quite comfortable in that bed. Plus when he felt like having a nap, he was able to sleep in that same position. Dad also had this bubble type mattress on top of the normal mattress that was on the bed and he said that this was very comfy indeed. The hospice doc said to me that this would help make him more comfortable with spending a lot of time in bed, and my dad agreed with that a lot!
As far as hugs go Lainy, if you and I ever get to meet each other, then you will be getting a massive hug from me!!!!

November 3, 2010 at 8:11 pm #43688lainySpectatorThank you guys. Teddy seems to be following Gavin’s dad. His pain started on the right side where the tumor is. Then he started complaining about pain pain and we just wanted to think it was his recliner chair. Now he is also complaing of stomach pain so I think they were very close in their pain progress. Yes, Hospice will increase it we just ask them and they call his ONC.
Steve-I also notice that sometimes I can’t understand what T is saying. I have always attributed it to the Morph. To him, I pretend I didn’t hear him….nothing new in that department. I also feel the bottom line is to make him as comfortable as I can.
Kris-and I would just hug you right back!!!!!!!!!!! You and so many others are the reason I became so addicted to this site. I am in awe of all of you! All of you have got me to where I am with CC & T. I could never have done this without you, my bestest family!P.S. T had a bone scan in June and all was ok, but that means nothing anymore. He was in his recliner most of the time which is why he thought he would switch to the bed for awhile. I did mention hospital bed to him and he made a face. I guess as long as he is more comfortable in bed its ok.
November 3, 2010 at 8:09 pm #43687jennifersMemberI have nothing to add but to let you know that my prayers and warmest thoughts are going to you and Teddy right now. I hope and pray his pain can be kept under control…

Let me toss out an idea. I have complete back pain, but I have been scanned and x rayed to death and they see nothing in my bones. It was decided that it is a result of too much time in bed. If Teddy is sleeping alot, this might be the problem. For my pain, Hans rubs my back nightly (and sometimes during the day). He has to be gentle because it REALLY hurts. Those rubs with the morphine seen to ease the pain. And Lainy, I think you are amazing. I wish I could meet you in real life and give you the biggest, warmest hug.

Nancy had CC with mets to to the lungs. She said she had pain that felt like a band tightening around her abdomen and back. It came on at varying degrees but it made lying on her back or stomach impossible. Nancy was only on hospice for 3 weeks but they continually upped her dose of morophine to address her increased pain. It is difficult to accept as she became less coherent with each dosage increase, but I take solace that we tried to make her as comfortable as possible. I wish you and Teddy the best.Steve St.Germain

You are indeed so brave and incredibly strong. And after one of these downward moments, I am so glad that you are able to pull yourself back to the card table. Hopefully this time you will get a better hand, a much better hand.
Just to also add to what Kimmie said about pre-existing back conditions, my dad never had that and had no problems with his back before CC.
Big hugs to you and Teddy,
Gavin
November 3, 2010 at 7:39 pm #43683gavinModeratorHi Lainy,
No this is not a weird question at all, and I will help if I can with regards to my dads situation which you know about. My dad got a pain in his back and he siad it was around the middle of the back and he had that for some weeks or so. It wasn’t the first pain that he got, the first was in his right hand side followed by a pain in the stomach area and lastly, he developed a pain in his back.
Whilst dad was at home, the pain was in his side, stomach and then his back and none of these were really constant pains but then they started to last longer when he got them. His meds at home worked quite well, but he still got them. Then when dad went into the hospice, his pain meds were upped and they also started giving him pain shots when needed and they worked a lot. Did Teddys nurse say anything about increasing his morph to you?
Obviously I can’t say if my dads is the same as Teddys pain, but I hope that some of that helps. And I so hope that you can get some more pain relief for T if needed.
Thinking of you both loads right now Lainy.
Gavin
