    Dear Mom’s Daughter,

I am so sorry for your loss and what you and your family have been through. Unfortunately I and so many more have had similar experiences and know exactly how you are feeling. Thanks so much for posting this, as although it may be hard for some to read, it may help others to know what to look for and expect. Try to take comfort in knowing that your Mom is in a better place, no longer suffering or in pain. She will always be with you in your heart and memories. Take care. You have my deepest sympathy.

    Wow! Kris,

That information is very disconcerting. Jim had some of the symptoms mentioned in the article before his problems with CC became apparent. Nothing severe, so we thought it was just age catching up with him. He did question taking the meds, but when he stopped the doctor said his levels were off and told him to go back on along with fish oil tablets. I am going for a physical on Monday and after reading all of that, I think if cholesterol meds are suggested I will decline. I know that not all who take these meds will die of cancer, but it is very thought provoking and does need to be addressed. It sounds to me like it is more about the money than what is best for the patient.

    Hi Patty,

As posted above, my husband was on a low dose simvastatin for several years before the CC. His liver enzymes were checked regularly and were normal in June ’08. Symptoms started in July and he passed away Sept. 2.
So, in his case, monitoring his enzymes didn’t help. I don’t understand how his enzyme levels could be normal when his cc was so advanced by the time it was diagnosed. Doesn’t really make much sense, but then again, nothing about this disease does.

I really question the use of any drugs now. My Dad who is 83 has had several health issues including an infection for which he was given antibiotics while in the hospital. After being sent home, he ended up back in the hospital after being released as he had c-diff which was brought on by the antibiotics he was given for the infection!

So anyway, I don’t know if there is a connection between cholestrol meds & CC, but it is something to be explored further.

    LD,

Don’t feel that you are being negative. You are just expressing how you feel. My feelings and experiences are similar to yours although it only lasted for less than 2 months, which at the time was almost impossible to accept & deal with, but knowing what I have learned here, for my husband it was a blessing, as his suffering was over. Jim has been gone 1 1/2 years and the memories still haunt me. This is an experience no one should have to go through, but we did and coming here helps me to deal with it. It will never go away, but I am trying to learn how to live with it and go on. Some days are harder than others, but we have to try. Please keep reading and posting when you can. It does help.

    Hi Courtney,

Good to hear from you. I think another opinion would be a good idea, too, since there is so much confusion. I do know how you feeling about the remark that if insurance covers it do it. My parents are both 83 and although their health issues are unrelated to CC, there have been a few times when things were recommended and they had already checked if insurance would cover it before they recommended it. Valid or not, my sisters and I wondered if it was about the money. In one case a second opinion proved that what was recommended was not necessary as my Mom didn’t even have what the first doctor claim she had! So, yes get another opinion and if you are still confused get another. They more information you get, willl help you to make a more educated decision. Hoping for the best for your Dad, you and your family.

    Irene,

I think Janet is right, you need to know all sides. In our case my husband decllined so rapidly after diagnosis that chemo wasn’t even an option because he was already too weak and compromised. Until then he lived a healthy, normal life, so based on our experience, I believe in quality over quantity of time. That said, everyone is different and no two cases can be treated or result in the same way. I think you know your body and life better than anyone else and ultimately to treat or not to treat is your decision to make. Thinking of you and hoping for the best for you what ever you decide to do.

    Hi Harm,

Welcome aboard. As you have learned, this is the best place to go for support, advice and everything else concerning CC. Wow! What an uplifting story. I love your attitude and strength. I am sure that your story will give hope to others who come here looking for it. You are young and have that wonderful little boy, so you have so much to live for. Love the hair story! :)
Keep posting, you are a welcome addition to our family.
