    Beth,
Oh man…! What the heck is going on here…? Dave can’t seem to get a break. A mere mortal would have caved by now but I love “Super Dave’s” continued great attitude – it makes such a difference. Dave is a true survivor. I feel like Dave is in a strange way my twin so I’m praying for a good plan for correcting this blockage.

    Mary,
I love your ‘attitude of gratitude’ expressed in your posting. I continue to pray that you and Tom will have many more years for which to express gratitude. And of course I’m praying now for Tom to get good news today…

    Betsy,
Any change in your situation? I’m awaiting good news from you…

    God Bless!

Great news! Nov. 4 is on my prayer calendar. So while your husband has an appointment with the surgeon, I’ll have an appointment with God on his behalf. God bless…

    Margaret,
Have you tried any of the nutrition drinks being suggested? There are a variety of them out there – something must be appealing to Tom. Come on Tom – you gotta do your part here Buddy! When I was recovering from surgery and then going through treatment, I too had no appetite. My weight was down by about forty pounds. My daughter came up with a plan which worked for me. She brought one of those Jack LaLane juicers over to the house and began concocting a variety of raw juices – most of which were a carrot base. She was more concerned with my nutrition than weight. I was able to drink down a few of these each day and over time was eating fairly normal.

    God Bless!!

    Minnie,
I’m so sorry that Karl is having to go through this cycle of infections. I know it can be frustrating and discouraging. For the last year when I had a stent/ tube to deal with a biliary blockage, I too had countless infections, many of them leading to hospital stays (I believe eleven times). At one point, the infectious disease Doc. suggested that a possible solution could be for me to be taking oral antibiotics daily as a preventative. The plan was to alternate between a few different meds so the ‘bugs’ couldn’t mutate and become resistant. You might ask if this has been considered so you and Karl can be more mobile. I’m sure winter in sunny CA with family would do Karl much good. Blessings and prayers to you…

It is of course possible that he is having a reaction to the Cipro. I myself didn’t but had violent reactions to Bactrim. Also, Ceftin causes me to just feel ‘unwell’ while I’m taking it. But there ought to be a little investigation to figure that out and not just blame it on a spread of cancer. So… the right move is see another onc. Just my opinion…

Grace and Peace to your husband,

    Hi Mary,
It does sound like Tom and I are on similar tracks. The monthly “scans” are just blood work to follow the state of my liver chemistry – no CT scans or the like at this point. If the episodes start up again (God forbid!) they will be doing CT and probably ultra sound to find the blockage as before. I am taking Ursodiol as a bile thinner. Have no idea if it is effective at this point but the bile continues to flow, so…

As far as a surgical option if needed, the two surgeons we’ve talked to are less than eager. They are concerned that the radiation has left much scar tissue which would make already risky surgery much more risky. So like Tom, I’m REALLY wanting to avoid either a partial resection or a transplant. But in the end, my trust must be in the Lord, not doctors.

Im praying that God will give you and the docs guidance through this current maze and that Tom will experience renewed hope and God’s peace.

    God Bless!

    Hi Betsy,
I retired around the time of my ‘issues’ so, no I didn’t work. But I was having trouble just doing some of the puttering I enjoy doing on my boat as by the time I began feeling better after one of the sepsis episodes, I’d get sick again. Plus, my daughter and my youngest son nagged me about not taking on too much – they feared fatigue would lead to another infection – which of course was unrelated. As for now, I’m feeling really good. God is good! I’m gaining stamina each day. PSC? We’re still doing monthly liver scans and watching…

I can’t imagine how frustrating this peristent leak must be to you. I continue to pray for a solution. As far as “how much longer…” can you do this? Without trivializing your situation, as long as you need to. Remember, you are you of the fortunate ones.

    God Bless!!

    Hi Mary,
First, I want to say how fortunate Tom is to have you as such an aggressive advocate. In the book of Genesis, before He created Eve, God declared “It is not good that man should be alone” – my response is: “Well, duh. You didn’t have to be God to figure that one out”. Men would be in deep ‘yogurt’ without women. Kudos to you!

I’ve only just recently had CA-19 tests and they did seem to elevate due to procedures and infections – but not nearly as high as Toms. However, they were thought by the docs to be insignificant. As far as the ERCPs being an issue, IR procedures have their own set of gremlins. I’d take an ERCP over an IR procedure. I’ll be praying that indeed Tom can be free of the stents in a few weeks. Let us know and we’ll have a party… BYOBB (bring your own bile bag).

    Grace and Peace,

    Dianne,
Yes, I’m still seeing my Onc. – well what was supposed to be every six months. But this last year, I’ve seen him way more times than I like to think about due to duct blockages and infections. CC seems to be the disease that ‘keeps on taking’. We think we have that worked out now and we can go back to “routinely”.

And Lainy my dear, you can call me anything you want without apology. “32” huh? It must be that full head of hair – don’t you think?

Love, Grace and Peace to the CC familly…

    Dear Beth,
“Cancer free” is indeed great news. Thank you God! This is all very familiar territory for me. The blockages; the infections; tubes and bags. Though it is a nuisance and the infections can be scary, it is all very do-able. I’m certain that Dave will begin to feel stronger and better day by day. We look forward to the day he can be tubeless again. And being hungry is such a positive sign.

Along with others I continue to pray for God’s very best for the Graff household.

    Hi Dianne,
I am a thirteen year survivor. I made a deal with my Onc. that I was going to go out of the door and just live my life, not knowing if each summer that came along would be my last; or the next Christmas; or our next anniversary and so on. Six months after surgery, I couldn’t know if I had six more months or six more years or… thirteen years. We don’t know in any case – God alone knows (and He aint’t tellin’). So I made a decision to do things I enjoyed doing with people I enjoyed. Now if remodeling the house would bring the two of you joy, by all means – remodel the house. I remodeled a house; rebuilt a car; bought a big old wood boat to mess about with (and ended up moving aboard) and found ways to help with short term mission projects in a few desperate third world locations and all of this brought me joy. Time is indeed precious but until we face a life threatening illness we act like we have an unlimited supply of it. And even if you are in the best of health, there is no way of knowing “how much more of it you will have”.

    Grace and Peace,
    bob
