I get my tubes changed about every 6 weeks. I think flushing the drains will help.

    Hi Andie,

I have a “pig-tail” catheter and I do flush them daily with 5cc of saline. Bile can be a bit thick so I also take a bile thinner, Ursodiol, 300mg 3x/day. Yes, tube changes can be done as a day-patient. My tube changes have always been that way. Sometimes I’ve had to stay the night if there was a complication such as an elevated blood pressure. I would definately stay on top of this problem so he doesn’t end up with a nasty infection.

    Hi Pam,
I too have had several bouts of cholangitis this year. My infectious disease doc put me on cipro 1x/day and I’ve been taking it since July 2010. He wants me to stay on it for a couple more months and said it was completely safe. As far as developing resistant bacteria, he said that can happen and probably already has in my case but I haven’t been sick since July.

I don’t know if this will help – I had ascites that was easily controlled with diuretics.
At the time I had ascites, I was cancer-free. I took the diuretics for several months and since the haven’t been troubled by it.

I can’t comment on “stranding”. I’ve never heard of that. Sorry.

    Hey Bob –
when you say the bile is flowing but slowly do you mean the bile is thick and sludge-like? If yes, do you know about ursodiol? You probably know about this medication but I take it 2-3x/day to keep my bile thin. Let me know what the docs decide to do.

My surgeon has proposed ablating the piece of liver where the leak is but my IR doc doesn’t want to go that route yet. So, I’m still stuck in a holding pattern. I suppose I could push for surgery but I trust my IR doc (he has taken care of me for a year now) and I hesitate to second-guess his judgement. As you and I know all too well, its never a straight forward procedure when it comes to your liver and there can always be complications. So, what’s a girl to do?

I am so grateful to be alive – I know how lucky I am to still be here. Thanks for the prayers.

Hi Bob – cholangitis again? have you had an infection since they removed the tubes this summer? is this because of the possible diagnosis of PSC? I’m disappointed for you but I’m so glad you heeded the warning signs and got yourself to the hospital.
Hopefully you are going home soon and you will be able to hold baby Chloe.

I’m still hanging around with 3 drainage bags. I was allowed to try “capping” one bag. After 5 days I became symptomatic and had to go bag to the bag. That was 3 weeks ago and since then the drainage numbers have been too high to try capping again.

I’m really confused. If you are a candidate for surgical removal of your tumor, how else would you know it was CC if a biopsy wasn’t performed? Or for that matter, if the tumor was malignant or benign? Is this discussion of whether or not to biopsy based on patients who are not candidates for surgery?

I’ve had 2 needle biopsies and several brushings and I’m still cancer-free (2 years this January). Prior to the biopsy, I had an MRI, Cat scan, ultrasound and blood work but the biopsy is what confirmed the diagnosis of cc. How else can the diagnosis be confirmed without a biopsy?

    Hi Lainy,
I get that medication every time I’m in the hospital. It works very well for pain but it is short-acting.

    Hi Jeand,
I am approaching my 2 year anniversary (Jan. 5, 2011) of being cancer-free. My tumor was about 4cm and located inside the right lobe bile ducts. Still grappling with post-operative issues but otherwise feeling very good and very lucky.
