Hi Lily…I also had 5FU delivered through an infusion pump…I would go to oncs office for chemo on Monday be sent home with infusion pump overnight..back to his office on Tuesday for additional chemo, by the time I was finished with the other meds the pump would be done. I have a double port so both could be given at once. I really had no problem with the pump other then it was odd to be sleeping with tubes and what is like a small shoulder bag. One warning however….cats love the tubing from the pump it sways..so being the curious creatures they are they want to catch it. One of my cats did and put a hole in the tubing! The pumps come with emergency phone numbers…they got back to me right away and explained to me how to shut the pump down…which meant I was longer at my oncs office the next day. They also told me that was the #1 reason they received phone calls…thoughts and prayers Nancy

Nica…I have a double port..I have been finished with chemo since Aug 10..but my surgeon told me realistically I should keep it in for 2 years after my surgery. I only had a blood return on one of the ports..the other was always dry..no explanation for that. I never had blood taken from my port because the oncologist I went to did not want to risk an infection. I know what you mean about your veins I recieved 5 cycles of Gem/Cis through my veins and by the 4th cycle they were wrapping my arms in warm towels to bring the veins to the surface. I wish you the best of luck with your port and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers…Nancy

Peony—So glad you went to see Dr. Schwartz

before seeing him I was treated at another very reputable cancer center….last hurdle I needed to jump was PET scan before surgery because my tumor had not spread from the right side of my liver also…Findings on PET showed areas that lit up in my chest…they had told me the cancer had spread and metastisized…fast forward went for 2nd opinion with Dr. Schwartz he looked at all my studies…he thought the cancer had not spread and areas of uptake were most likely from stenting procedures to release the bile that had collected. They do go through your chest when they stent at least they did with me. I did a CT same day with Dr. Schwartz he was correct…he operated last Jan. my last scan was clear and everything that had been in my chest is gone. Did Dr. Schwartz order a CT that day? If you are not comfortable with his findings perhaps a 3rd opinion would help. At any rate just being considered a candidate for surgery is huge. Best of luck to you and your husband I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers and please keep us updated. Forgot to add that yes I did have 5 treatments of Gem/Cis prior to seeing Dr. Schwartz he felt that it may have benefited some.

Hi Linda….I had my CC surgery Jan 2010 right lobe of my liver removed along with my gallbladder and bile duct resection. Surgery went well and I had no post op problems…on March 1st of 2010 I started 6 months of adjuvant chemotherapy. I went on Mondays and Tuesdays every other week so 4 days out of the month. I was given 5 different types of chemotherapy I have a double port which made it so much easier. I can’t recall all of the meds although I know I did receive Gemzar,Irontecan,Leucovorin,Eloxatin, and Fluorouracil. Also, a host of anti-nausea meds which all were distributed through the port. I tolerated the chemotherapy very well….just some hot flashes and weight gain which I think can be attributed to the steroids. I finished chemo in August of 2010 it is now March 2011 I had my 1 year scan in Feb and all was clear. The only lasting effects I have from the chemo is some neuropathy in my fingers and feet a very small price to pay. I will agree that the health of the patient when beginning chemotherapy has a lot to do with how well the patient handles it. Most importantly though please, please remember to bring a positive state of mind. I wish you nothing but success with your chemotherapy. Please keep us updated on your progress.

Lilack—I’m also from New Jersey—I had a second opinion after initially being told I was not a candidate for resection for my IHCC from Sloan. I took all my radiology reports and any other relevant info to Dr. Myron Schwartz at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NY after reviewing my scans he deemed me a candidate for surgery. I’am now 1 year post surgery with a clean CT just 2 weeks ago. I agree with everyone that a 2nd and if needed 3rd opinion should always be looked into by everyone. It is true unfortunately that depending on where the tumor is and if vascular invasion, or mets to any other organ are present surgery may not be an option. I hear very good things about Dr. Kato also and if u live close to NY and get the NY t.v. stations they have many commercials regarding Dr. Kato. Dr. Schwartz phone# 212-241-9049 Best of luck to you and your mom she is very lucky to have you.—Nancy

Thanks to all @ Peony (one of my favorite flowers I have quite a few bushes in my backyard) Dr. Schwartz is wonderful and caring but he is a man that does not have to say many words you can just feel the warmth and real concern when he is in the room with you. Not to mention he is a brilliant surgeon in my book he’s the man!
