I haven’t been on this site for quite awhile as my mom passed away at the end of October from this and I was spending as much time with her as possible. But for the last few days Duke and all of his wise words and positivity have been on my mind. I am so sorry to see that he has passed, but I know he’s in a better, pain free place now. Dukes family, I didn’t know your dad but I really enjoyed reading his posts and can tell he was an amazing man. My thoughts and prayers are with you!

Thank you for the advice. At the moment she’s considering not doing the surgery, but the appointment was only yesterday. I truly hate this disease. Last year at this time my mom was healthy and my family was getting ready to go spend a month with my parents. Now this year is entirely different and not in a good way. I am really thankful that I found all of you–you are definitely helping during a difficult time and providing tons of information. Thank you!

Thank you for the responses! I imagine her oncologist meant rescheduling it and not missing it entirely. The oncologist told this to my dad so I’ll check with him. As long as it’s not going to hurt her, this would be great to get her out of her element for a little bit. She’s been house bound sine November and, as I’m sure a lot of you have experienced, has been battling a brutal winter back east. Thank you again!

Thank you! I got so frustrated that I called her insurance company myself! The woman I spoke with did have a little bit of encouraging words. She said that if my mom’s PCP will sign off, then she can go to another place for a second opinion and it will be covered. And, if the treatment was going to be different/better and my mom liked it and the PCP signs off on that, then it would also be covered! Now, my parent’s just have to sweet talk the PCP!

    Hi Lainy,

She is in Pittsburgh, PA and being treated at UPMC Cancer Center in Pittsburgh. The Cancer Center actually opened a branch in the town she lives in which is an hour outside of Pittsburgh, so that’s actually where she is being treated. Her oncologist is Rushir J. Choksi and surgeon is Dr. Allen Tsung.

Thank you so much for all of your answers! I know my mom is nervous about a second opinion because, as silly as it sounds, she doesn’t want to hurt her doctor’s feelings! She’s just that type of person. So, we’re talking about it now and hopefully she’ll be willing to do it. Thank you again!

As of now the doctor is moving forward as planned which is good news! Nothing came up in any of the tests indicating why she had the acute stroke. We just keep praying and moving on! She will also find out this week if the tumor is shrinking, so please keep her in your prayers! Thank you!

    Lainy,
I’m sorry for the delay in answering where my mom is being treated. I live in CA, but am from PA. She is being treated near Pittsburgh by doctors from the Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh. Thank you for all the great info you provided!

    Meghan
